can I have some urgent help re dangerous cooker?

Miss-Incognito, 26 May, 2009 at 12:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I normally post on BT but need some urgent help please.

I bought a cooker 7 years agao (almost to the day, have the receipt) from john lewis. I just took out a tray of food fromthe top oven, closed it and the front of the glass door shattered all over me, my 11 month old and the entire kitchen floor. We're both alright, though very shaken up.

I've called JL but they're going to call me back as my son was crying so we couldn't hear one another. I can't think straight and need some pointers as to what to ask from them. I'm concerned at the safety of the bottom oven now too, I have a top oven that is certainly unusable. I know that I have no claim under contract as I bought it more than 6 years ago.

Sorry if this is really curt, I'm in a bit of a tizz. I'd be grateful to anyone who can help direct me on this.

I don;t see that they have to do anything for you? It's a 7 year old cooker, well out of warranty, I would think you're just going to have to buy a new one.

Who is the manufacturer? Is it their own brand? Is your main point that there is a safety issue? Because I think with any type of glass there is always a chance it can shatter

Thanks HL, tbh unless an oven is being seriously misused/mistreated I wouldn't expect this sort of thing to happen in its lifespan, ever. I'm certainly not expecting a new oven from them or anything like that, but I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to come out, have a look t it and refit a new glass panel.

I know what you mean - I wouldn't EXPECT it to happen, but if it did I wouldn't expect the shop to care. ? I clearly have low expectations. And never buy anything from JL so don't know what they're like over this sort of thing.

Glad you're all ok though, it sounds scary

I wouldn't expect that to happen, but, the oven is 7 years old so it wouldn't even cross my mind to contact the shop where i'd bought it. I'd just go and buy myself a new one.

    Glad you're both OK.

I think I've seen a couple of threads on here in the last few months where this has happened to other people, so it is surprisingly 'common' for something you'd expect not to happen (although still very unusual).

I doubt that JL will do anything as it's a 7 yr old oven, but they are generally very good with their customer service so you might be surprised.

    It does seem fairly common

although I appreciate that doesn't make it any less scary when it happens.

Wow, interesting reading, I've truly never heard of this happening before. Anyhow, quick update, I contacted the manufacturers who thought th emost likely explanation was an existing hairline fracture whick just ruptured when the expansion/contraction from the heating up and cooling down got too much. I've arranged for them to come out and repair/replace together with a brand new 12 months guarantee, even though it's a 7 year old oven. The cost of that is a fraction of what a new appliance woud cost, and they were very helpful and friendly, so I'm happy with that.

Thanks all, off to clear up the kitchen now.
