Can someone work this out for me?

Ostrich, 1 September, 2009 at 16:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I'm struggling to get my head around this, wondered if someone else could!

There's one parking permit shared amongst two colleagues. Colleague 1 works all day Monday, all day Tuesday, half day Wednesday. Colleague 2 works all day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Colleague 1 suggests he has the permit on Monday all day, plus Weds morning and that Colleague 2 uses the permit all day Tuesday, plus Weds afternoon. Colleague 2 suggests this is unfair as she will then have to pay for meter parking all day Monday plus Weds morning, whereas colleague 1 only has to pay for meter parking all day Tuesday. Colleague 1 argues that he only works 2.5 days per week as opposed to Colleague 2's three days a week, (and salary wise only gets paid for 2.5 days, as opposed to colleague 2's salary for 3 days), therefore of course his meter parking should cost him less.

Who's right?

Erm, well on the face of it I'd say he was right because you both get the same amount of use but I can also see your point. Erm, not sure ?

I'm not either of them in this instance, Sun. ? It's been handed to me to sort out and I can't decide who's bloody right!

I've been very slack, haven't I? Work is mad again, I've been off for 2 weeks, had my gall bladder out prior to that, moved house.....blah, blah. Will email you this week.

I'd say that colleague 1 is being very fair.

Irrespective of how many hours they both work, they're both getting equal use of the permit if they have it a full day and a half day each. I guess each of them chose how many hours they work a week therefore colleague 2 doesn't really have an argument as she is still getting the same amount of use as colleague 1.

Having to make HR decisions is a bummer isn't it - this kind of thing is part of my role too and it does my nut in sometimes.

    HTH and good luck!!

I would say that colleague 1 gets the permit all day Monday and Tuesday morning, and that colleague 2 gets it Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday as it would be easier for her.

I would be tempted to suggest that as colleague 1 only works 2.5 days as opposed to 3, then he should get the permit for the proportional amount of time... But I don't think that could work in practice!

Or they could do alternate weeks?

    Good luck with the solution!

I think colleague 1 is being fair and seems like a good solution

I can see C1's point however I can also see that it doesn't seem right as C2 is getting the permit for a smaller proportion of their working week.

I would go with whoever said alternate weeks, that way it's a fair split (or at least I think it is!)

Seems like a dumb sharing situatiuon to me. if there are lot of part-timers, wouldn't it make more sense for them to share with someone who works different days?

Is the parking really expensive, or are they making a big deal out of 50p?

Sorry, I am not much help, am I?

I would split it, if the one who get's less isn't happy then tell her not to have it at all and she'll soon be greatful! Alternatively.. you have it and sod them both! My work has about 5 places for 200 staff! I cycle in and it sucks in the rain.. i have no sympathy! x

I agree with Bostongirl and in fact had just come on to post the same thing

Alternatively, does your company have any sort of car share scheme? Would this be a possibility to save parking costs?
