Canapés - opinions

s0phaz, 10 July, 2014 at 16:14 Posted on Planning 0 3

Today I've been to see my wedding venue, and speak to the coordinator, and get things sorted, it's made me super excited, but it has also made me think that the time between the ceremony and wedding breakfast seems a long time, especially from actual breakfast which will be served until 9.30 in the hotel. Canapés are £4.95 for 3 per person, is it worth it? I'm now unsure because wedding breakfast is likely to be served at 3.30pm will canapés make all that difference? What is everybody else doing? I asked if we can take nibbles with us, like crisps or nuts for people to nibble on, but that's a no. originally I had said no to canapés all together but I don't want my guests to get hungry. Now I don't know what to do...

I think this very much depends on your timings – when is your ceremony? How long is the gap between your ceremony and your wedding breakfast?

Opinion tends to be divided on this, but personally think it’s important to keep people well-fed and watered when they are your guests. If your ceremony falls over a lunchtime (which by the sounds of the other times you’ve mentioned it will) then guests are potentially not going to eat for seven hours, which is a long time to go without food (or am I just greedy?!). If my guesses are right, then yes, I think you should have canapés. Just my opinion though, good luck with your decision!

If your guests are coming to a lunch time ceremony, 9.30am to 3.30pm is a long time without nibbles, so I definitely think you should have some as long as it's not going to kill your budget. But I also think 3 canapes is not great. Assuming there's one you turn your nose up at as it's not your favourite contents (eg. fish - a lot of people don't like fish canapes it seems), then that's two mouth fulls. Not exactly substantial.

You can sometimes suggest alternatives to canapes to the venue, in order to get more substantial 'nibbles' for either the same or a lower cost.

We were quoted £6 per head for canapes when we booked the venue, so contracted without any canapes at all as an extra £600 for not much didn't sit well with us. A couple of weeks before the wedding we negotiated for some feta/olives pots, spicy sausage and other nibbles for about half the original canapes cost.

I'm guessing that it helped that we just turned the canape suggestion down flat originally, so they were willing to negotiate later. Plus canapes are fiddley and therefore do cost more to produce in contents and in time effort. The nibbles we organised were probably vastly easier to prepare and serve, even if they weren't that much cheaper in ingredients terms.

Yea the ceremony is 1pm the. Photos and drink (possibly canapés ha ha) the. Sit down for food at 3.30. I. Thinking about it now and how hungry people are going to be. I know I'll be starving.

Might speak to them about what else they could offer, that's a good idea.
