Cancelling gym membership - any comeback?

deedee, 1 September, 2009 at 21:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Hi

I am a member of a gym (Fitness First). My membership was frozen when I was pregnant and three months ago I am being charged again. I have no childcare to use the gym and am due to start back work soon and definately will have no time then. We have no money at the moment and I cannot afford to pay the fees.

I have been told by a friend to just cancel the membership and that FF will not waste money chasing me in small claims court. I don't want to take this risk though really. Also do you know if it will affect credit rating if I have no choice but to cancel?

Thanks so much in advance x

    Hi deedee,

How long have you been a member with the gym and what membership do you have? You really need to check the T&C's of your membership. Normally any gyms etc will have a maximum period of 12months membership requirement and then you will be free to cancel when you choose x

    Thanks

I am not 100% sure as my membership has been frozen for so long. I will give them a bell tomorrow

    Thanks again x

Just be sure of your membership terms as FF are notorious for trying to hang on to your direct debit.

I had flexible membership (cancel at any time) and had to fight to cancel the membership...just stand your ground as they seem to know all the tricks to keep your money flowing.I belong to another forum (here in Australia) and there were pages of complaints about them in UK and Aus!

    Deedee,

I found a couple of links on their website. Did you still have to pay a lower amount when your membership was frozen? I don't see anything that say's that while your membership is frozen that it doesn't count towards your membership time, I don't see how you can't cancel it then, although it does look like you have to give a month notice.

From what I remember with FF, after you'd done the original 12 month contract it was just on a monthly basis, so you only need to give them a month's notice to cancel. I think you may lose out slightly because a new month has just started, I'm sure there was something where it would be closer to 2 months if you tried to cancel before the end of the month, eg if you'd cancelled in writing before 31st August you'd just have to pay Sept, but if you cancelled on 1st Sept you'd have to pay Sept and Oct. It was a few years ago and I may have got that wrong though.

I used to be a member of FF, and after 12 months your contract is just a rolling contract so you can cancel at any time. Before the 12 months are up, though, I'd imagine you'd have to give 1 months notice.

FF are rubbish anyway, I would hedge my bets and just cancel the dd!

FF are murder to get away from. My H wrote to cancel, in good time with a month's notice. They phoned him to come in and do it in person and they still took money from his Credit Card - details given for id - when the direct debit to the bank was cancelled.

They also swore blind they had no record of him cancelling - see above, they phoned HIM to discuss it!

I joined fitness first 2 years ago and just cancelled my Direct Debit before completing my contract as I was unemployed at the time and couldn't afford the 30 quid a month. They sent a few letters both from themseleves and a 'debt collector' which i just ignored as I honestly had no choice. I couldn't afford the money every month. After 2-3 letters from their collector I didnt hear anything else.

Then last year I joined again (how cheeky hehe) and the guy at the desk said I would have to use my middle name as my surname because I was still down as a 'debtor' on their system. He said the threatening letters they send are just to try to get people to pay, and they never follow them through as they would lose money rather than gain.

I have since cancelled that membership too (naughty naughty) But this time it was because I wasn't satisfied with the standard at the gym. Again they sent me 2 letters about 5 months ago which I ignored. I've done credit checks on myself and nothing for Fitmess First is listed on their at all, either negative or positive.

So if I was you I would just cancel it. I bet loads of epople have cancelled it, if your cutting back a gym membership would be one of the first to go wouldn't it.

I sound like such a bad person now, never paying my bills lol who would believe I work in finance

That's what they tried to do to me last week. I submitted my cancellation on line on 28 August and they called me earlier this week to say that the cancellation would start from when the request was actioned, not when I submitted it as the website says. They tried to make me pay for september and october but it's just one full calendar months' notice - so if you cancel anytime from now until the end of September it'll run out at the end of October.
