Cancelling Mobile Phone contract

amandam, 15 July, 2008 at 21:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

How do you go about this?

My stepdad wants to cancel his contract now (hes on month 16 of an 18 month and they wont give him a new phone and his one wont work now... long story blah blah). He knows he has to pay up to 18 months but what does he actually need to do?

Hes with Vodafone. Write letter to confirm cancelling contract, ring them ??

He can upgrade 70 days before the end of his commitment so if he is in his 16 month he won't have long to wait. Letter of cancellation to Vodafone, I work for them, they'll only accept a letter to cancel and its 30 days notice.

Ring them and say he wants to leave, they may be able to do something.

He really wants to leave as they wont give him a new phone as he was honest - if he lied and said he'd dropped it he'd have got a new one asap, but as it broke on its own he cant have a new one.

I used tio work for Orange and we had the same policy. I always find it bonkers that a phone company wont accept notice by phone and that you have to write a letter. We also insisted the same with complaints. It used to wind the customers up really badly.

If he lied and said he dropped it then they wouldnt replace it unless he has insurance and thats a different scenario? If its not working then they'll repair it? Manufacturers warranty if for 12 months, Vodafone cover the rest themselves to repair handsets etc.

Anyway to cancel he'll need to write in and if he wants to take his number elsewhere then he can just pay the remaining line rental upfront, request a pac code then use it. If he requests the pac code then he wont need to write in but will need to pay the remaining line rental before the request can go through

If it's an upgrade (i.e. extend contract for another 18 months) then they should be able to give him a new phone anyway I'd have thought - you don't need to provide your old phone... Well, I didn't when Orange lost my broken-meant-to-be-repaired phone and upgraded me early (new contract)...

Yeah can be a pain sometimes. Complaints are not the same with Vodafone, prefer to do everything on the phone not written except cancelling obvously lol
