Caps lock - what is the fecking point?

SophieM, 4 November, 2008 at 12:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Gah - I keep having to retype screeds of stuff because I've caps locked by mistake. I know you can change the case in word, but by the time you've copied the text, pasted into Word, changed the case and copy-and-pasted back again you might as well have retyped it. Is there any way I can get rid of this stupid, annoying, utterly redundant mo'fo of a key? Why do keyboards even haave it any more?

[visions of Sophie typing at the keyboard, with her head 180 degrees the other way] ? Do you not look at the screen while you're typing? Awwww...! ❤️

Woo hoo - I've disabled it! Go to System preferences in your Apple menu, choose Keyboard and Mouse under hardware, select keyboard, click Modiefier Keys and change to No Action in the drop-down menu by Caps Lock.

    Ha! ?

My H uses the caps lock key all the time, in place of the shift key to capitalise the first letter of a word. I have no idea why he does this, but no matter how many times I tell him that it's much easier just to hold down shift he still does it. It doesn't really affect me but annoys me soooo much.

Oo I can answer this one!!

I used to hate caps lock until we had to start filling in the Stamp Duty forms online and they had to be in all block capitals. Then it was a godsend ?

I would have agreed till I joined the civil service. Our IT systems came off the ark so I'd struggle at work without it but it's nearly as annoying as the number lock when you're in the real world ?

? at those lazy ass programmers making the users ensure caps-lock case requirements are met rather than doing things properly themselves! Begger's belief. I was using a webform the other day that had a text box for a date, which specified that the date had to be in "DD/MM/YY" type format - yes, they made the user type the slashes, wouldn't accept a four-digit year input, and hadn't bothered to provide some nice click-a-calendar functionality.

All those programmers will be shot first at the Revolution! etc. ?

I personally don't see the point of num lock as I use the numbers above the letters rather than the ones at the right of the keyboard, but anyone at work who's tried to use my keyboard has used the numbers on the right and they get cross cos I don't have num lock on. I don't know why I appear to the only person in the world who doesn't use those numbers but someone suggested it could be because I'm left handed.

I've seen people typing using caps lock in place of shift and it fills me with an irrational anger ?
