Car insurance renewal - WWYD ?

Pint&APie, 19 May, 2009 at 09:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

The great deal we took out six years ago has been steadily creeping up, despite ever increasing no-claims-bonuses, so I thought I'd give one of those comparison sites a go.

Current deal is £413, with a £0 excess.

I've been quoted £271, but with a £250 excess (the company don't do a £0 one)

WWYD ? I only do 60 miles a month and I haven't had to make a claim in 16 years, so on the one hand I probably won't be claiming in the next year. That said, am I tempting fate, as I'm probably due one. ?

Normally I'm the decisive one, but this has really thrown me. The money really isn't an issue, but I've been brainwashed by that meerkat into worrying that I'm not getting the best possible deal.

Is there not another deal somewhere in the middle ground with a slightly smaller excess? With your history i'd probably go for the cheapest option but then like you i'd probably thing knowing my luck i'd prang the car the following week.

    Not very helpful am I?

i'd go for the cheaper one

If it makes you feel any better, try comparing the meerkat instead?

Have you tried going through a broker? Ive used a broker for a few years now and they always come up with a really good price, with £100 excess maximum. I did have a look on confused.com this year to see what they could come up with, the cheapest being £285 to insure my smart, my broker came up with £216.... no contest.

I use 2gether financial services based in Cambs, the telephone number is ****, might be worth getting a quote from them.

    Cheers all,

Just spoke to our current insurers, who have agreed to match the new quote, and impose only a £50 excess.

Amazing what you get if you just ask ! ?

Much love going to Elephant, and their charming Welsh operative Georgina.

I do this every year - search a couple of comparison sites for quotes, then go back to elephant and say I'm not renewing as I've got a cheaper price. Have done it for the past 3 years and they've always matched the price.

    Tesco insurance don't!

I got my renewal through (been with Tesco for about 7 years) and looked on the comparison sites and found a policy with Sheilas Wheels for £145 cheaper (exact same excess and covers etc) - rang tesco who offered me £20 off their quote and said they couldn't price match.

I am now with Sheilas Wheels!

I always get a new quote online and then ring Tesco and say "if i was a new customer I would pay this.....", then they cancel my existing policy and I set up a new 'cheaper' one.
