Career help/advice. Bit of a HRML please.

I'm in a rut. I'm 30 and don't know what I want for a career.

I didn't get any guidance from family as to what I might like to do (mum was a single mum from when i was 2 and dad is self-employed electrician). School didn't help and I just didn't know what i wanted to do. Fancied being an air hostess but wasn't sure if that was just a childhood dream all girls had, I did send off to BA for an application form but when it came back I was put off (you needed to be X weight X height blah blah) and didn't think I'd be good enough. I got 9 A-C GCSEs in 1994, still didn't know what i wanted to do so went to 6th form and fell into an NVQ in travel and tourism. Teachers took me aside a month into the NVQ and said I should do A-levels, so I started English and Geography. Things weren't going well with peers in the 6th form and after a call from my cousin who worked for a law firm i quit after 6 months and started as a receptionist there and then quickly became a legal sec then a PA.

That was 14 years ago. And I still don't know what I want to do with my time. I'm married and have two children (am currently on maternity leave and due to go back part time in March). I'm also in the middle of a home learning course doing computerised bookkeeping because I like working with numbers but I'm finding it hard to stay focused and after not doing any for nearly a year I've gone back to reading through what I've already done to try to catch up and pick up where i've left off.

I just don't know what I want to do. i've thought about physiotherapy but after one comment from someone (there are two many physios and not enough jobs - apparently) I'm a bit put off. I don't feel satisfied in my job but the money is decent and the hours good at the moment.

Any advice? i've tried googling for places for advice but they've not been much help.

Nobody fancied sorting my life out for me then? No? ? That's fine, i'll just sit here and undo all the good work I've done at the gym tonight by scoffing my face with this lovely baked cheesecake ?

See someone! I saw a careers consultant through Penna (not sure what they're called now) and she was fantastic. I can't recommend them highly enough.

There was a thread on here recently with a link to a Careers Advice 'questionnaire'. I'll see if I can find it.

It would help if we were a bit better at using tags on OT (but least we're entertaining ?)

Thanks all. I did fill in a questionnaire recently but all it did was summarise everything I knew already and didn't give me any inkling as to what would suit me!

Cheesecake was fab....not enough of it, as usual! [oink]
