careers advice

There is a remote possibility that i might need to get a job again but given no one is building roads at the moment i'm not going to get a job doing what i once did iyswim.

anyway i need to find something else to do and i don't know where to start. I'm a Chartered CIvil Engineer i've never done anything else other than waitressing pre uni!

i'm sure i have loads of transferable skills but i don't even know what i want to do other than engineering.

ideas on a postcard please.

qualification wise i have gcses, a levels, 2 civil engineering degrees and a professional registration.

could do with out this but need to think it throuhg just in case.

I have no idea what you could do as i have no idea of the field of work your in

but what i have been doing lately is looking for jobs that interest me and either using at a took to look into training or just looking for jobs that i would like to apply for and applying and tbh i have had a few interview this way

remember though you arent just what your job role is you also have other skills like running a house being a mother these can also be used in interviews as skills etc

i suppose it depends though on if you want a different career or if this would be a stop gap until you can get more work in your field iyswim

    Thanks

i was a project manager when i left i was running multi million pound feasibility studies so i have projecty skills there.

i dont know if this would be a stop gap or not i might find something i really love and walk away from engineering.

    thanks again

Hi sparkling, you need to break down the different aspects of your job and look at what skills you need to do them that can be transfered so not the specific surveying skills but like you project managing, were you in charge of budgets? did you deal with suppliers? negotiating? did you contact other businesses to create business relationships? etc probably once you start looking the list will be longer than you think and also think about the skills you have developed in your personal life through hobbies and bringing up your family. Once you have done that you will get a better idea of the type of jobs you could do, you might be using your skills in a different way but will still have a lot of skills to offer!

    I hope that helps x

    Thanks

this is exactly what i need to do take the engineering out of my job and see what skills are left (which is loads).

I had a senior role so i was in charge of budgets, dealt with suppliers (sub consultants), i was supposed to negotiate but i'm rubbish at that! I was a direct link to the client and did a lot of repairing client relationships.

I guess ihave all the training stuff as well i'm a registered supervising engineer so that helps as I was responsible for overseeing the development of several graduates.

i've been surfing the net for project management roles and there are thousands of them i just need to narrow it down a bit over the next month. that's how long until we know if i need to go job hunting or not. Hopefully not but having seen some of these salaries I think Mr S might!

If it appeals, I always recommend the Build Your Own Rainbow workbook for ideas on life direction...

I'm having the same problem Sparkling - was made redundant last year and there are no jobs around doing what i did (town planning) - not that i want to go back to that at the moment anyway but no idea what to do - am looking for part time admin jobs at the moment but am too 'over qualified' for everything i go for.

Good luck with your search Sparkling, sounds like you have loads of great transferable skills, someone will bite your hand off once you have got them all straight in your head to sell yourself!

Goldfish why dont you aim a bit higher then, I would tailor your CV for every job you apply for so you can play up the skills you have that you would need for each role. If you really want an admin role put in your personal statement why and what your aspirations are, the main reason you wont get jobs for being over qualified is that they think you will leave when something better or in your urrent field comes along so if you can demonstrate you wont with your CV (even if that is not the case) you might stand a better chance x
