Catering.....Is my idea crazy weird or just plain wonderful!?

sara.jo, 24 June, 2010 at 17:21 Posted on Planning 0 21

Our caterer came to meet us last night for the first time..He went through some of the options and also said he was very open to any ideas we had. He showed us a photo album of food he has served up and venues he has done..All very nice..I am having a June wedding (18th) and its an outside civil ceremony, drinks on the lawn (weather WILL be sunny!!!!) and then wedding breakfast/reception in a marquee in the same grounds. So my plan (rough one!) is this:

Reception drinks on the lawn, with canapes coming round on platters by waiting staff (for approx 1 hr while photos etc are being done). There will also be lawn games I think...all this depends on the weather of course!

Sit down meal would either consist of a starter & main, or a main and dessert..... OR (and this was my grand idea!)...Starter (pate or crab cakes), Main (prob Lamb with herb crust), and then instead of dessert, a cake stand (venue/wedding = very English, so those really nice cream shabby chic cake stands ala Laura Ashley!) per table full of scones served with clotted cream and raspberry preserve to go with tea and coffee. Is that weird?? Honest answers please? We arent having many more people attending in the evening but are still thinking of having a bbq outside the marquee for those that want more food. To be honest, the catering looks like its going to be pretty expensive and although I want a sit down meal (with silver service), the scone idea was so it was slightly cheaper but also because it fits in with the vintage/english theme I would like a hint of at my wedding.

Remember, honest answers please :o) And any ideas to cut the cost would be good too :o) For a wedding where there are literally about 20 more people for the evening, do you think you have to put a load more food on in the evening?

Thanks guys xx

    Hiya

I think its a great idea and I think there is hitcher(s) on here who is having similar idea and having like a cake/tea party

I think its a good idea and would save on the costs. If you are having 20 extra people for the evening then something simple too like a BBQ would be a good idea. Sit down formals put the cost up so anything around informal or 2 courses instead of 3 brings the prices down considerably.

But the afternoon tea/scones/cakes is a really lovely idea x something I would certainly have considered if doing a summer wedding.. but dont think it would be a good idea beginning of Feb

    go with it.. defdo

    xx

The whole cream tea thing sounds lush. Can I come? ?

I think you should do what you want. Could you source the scones etc to try and cut costs on overheads?

I wouldn't put on alot of food in the evening as you would've just fed most of your guests x

Not sure I would want a scone after my dinner. It might be a wee bit filling. Think I might have them instead of canapes. Then just serve your cake instead of a dessert! or have the main and dessert!

We are having a tea party theme and htought about it as an idea but my OH has set his heart on having jelly and ice cream so we are now opting for that. So we are having a cream tea the day before with all of our guests that have travelled to see us. As someone has said before think about your canapees as well - think little sandwiches and chees scones we are havign these and they are cheaper than normal ones so instant saving!!

Yesssssssssss!!! I'm having an afternoon tea with scones and clotted cream ? Not as part of a meal though but as a meal itself, with cucumber sandwiches and everything!

Evening sit down diner for all guests afterwards!

Everyone loves scones and cream! At one point it looked like we'd have to get married at 4 or 5pm, and I thought in that case it would have been really nice to have an afternoon tea and cutting the cake before the ceremony, to make the most of the afternoon.

Like someone mentioned though, scones after dinner might be a little heavy, so they could replace the canapes?

I'm not sure...I really like the idea of high tea, but could you not do that for all of it - I'm not sure it works with a proper starter and main. I'd be tempted to do the high tea idea with sandwiches.

If you want to save money could you cut the canapes? We're not bothering with them.

    Hey everyone....

Thank you for all your lovely replies....All in all, I think the concensus is its a good plan! I know what a couple of you mean (ie: I was worried that it may not completely 'go' with the rest of the sit down meal, or that it may be too filling). I was actually thinking of having mini scones....scones can be pretty big and heavy. I am going to spend some time this weekend rethinking the food plan for the day. Seems like a lot of food to do, and we are only having about 70 day guests and then a further 20 in the evening. Going to have a look at this 'high tea' thing....sounds very nice and would go nicely with the theme I am trying to create.

Thank you again - so glad Ive found hitched to air and share! ❤️
