Catholic Wedding

SJM1988, 29 May, 2013 at 09:55 Posted on Planning 0 9

Can anyone help?

I'm planning a catholic wedding and wondered if anyone could give me an idea of how much roughly the church and all costs when they were planning. I've been told to watch out for extras such as heating and extra people to help - would you recommend these! I'm looking for an idea of what I need to save.

Thanks

This really does vary from church to church. I have known a church wedding cost anywhere between £300 and £1000.

Don't forget for most catholic weddings you may need to pay for the registrar to come out, too. So this can add some extra cost.

As it is so variable, I would budget for the upper limit then contact your church as soon as possible to enquire about costs.

As Kharv says, it varies from church to church so contact yours asap to discuss.

My church (CofS) charges these extras, not sure about heating but definately for any extra people like the Beadle. This is fine but they also charge for the organist, even if you play your own music and the organist doesn't attend - he still has to be paid like he is there! ?.

Bear in mind that if you have a Catholic ceremony the church may stipulate that you attend pre-marriage classes, and it is up to the individual priest and how 'strict' he is about things like co-habiting and having children with your partner before marriage. Some may refuse to marry you on this basis.

Well I am probably in the minority here but ours is free. My priest has known me since I was 7 and wouldn't accept any money for the wedding.

We're donating the flowers afterwards though and giving a contribution to SVP or CAFOD or another Catholic charity our priest chooses. And will probably give a 'thank you' gift to the registrar who comes to do the legal stuff...

Heating and extra people... We're just having ushers do all the work, and as it's summer we won't bother with heating but I can't imagine our priest would charge us for that anyway. Maybe it depends on the size and age of the church?

You definitely need to check with your priest to find out, like others have said, every church is different!

    EDITED TO ADD:

We don't have to pay for a registrar to come out. As far as I know every Catholic church (at least Roman Catholic anyway, I'm not sure about other branches) should have an authorised person who does the legal stuff, who doesn't charge. It's not like getting a registrar to come out for a civil ceremony.

A friend of mine was asked for a donation, rather than an actual amount but wanted more info. The priest suggested around 10% of her dress cost.

Ours (catholic) seems cheap compared to costs I've heard some people are paying for CoE but it varies from place to place. Ours is 140 for licence and less than 250 for church costs including the organist.

We only had to attend a one day marriage prep course, but our priest is very relaxed and not that strict.

Thanks everyone. Our church won't talk about fees until at least a year before our wedding.

Luckily I am converting to being catholic so the priest is aware we want to get married their just won't talk about or book anything until a year before

I agree, you could just ask them for ballpark figures? Like is it going to be 3 figures or 4 lol.

Btw my H2B is half-converting too (not making holy communion or confirmation, just getting baptised) and I know how ecstatic I was when he said he would do it, your H2B must be a lucky man Smiley smile

Perhaps you could have your wedding planner asking them? They can give an approximate price if it is a question from a professional and then you will also knowSmiley smile

    Best

Mine is about 180 pounds ; including ore marriage counselling which is compulsory. The church fees itself was about 130. ( the registrar doesn't need to come out but Catholic Churches normally have a representative who is a member of the church acting on behalf of the state at the wedding so some of the fees go to that person)

best thing is to arrange your pre marriage counselling, cost about 60 pounds per couple, you can do it in any catholic approved prep classes ie marriage care etc. they can provide you with info on everything from order of service, paper work etc. also it was useful going to the diocese web page as things are usually similar in each diocese ie. in London I'm part of Westminster

organists/singers fees will come separately but that is optional .

im getting married in August, got engaged in February but I've managed to finish the church bit of the planning. Let me know if you need more info.

if you are not fussed about flowers, just use the flower arrangement set up for church the next day or for a cheaper quote he church florist who will charge 30 percent of what a proper florist will.....
