Cats being poisoned

*Mini*, 22 November, 2012 at 19:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Over the weekend out neighbours cat died, he was really old but the vet said that it could be antifreeze poisoning.

Am really scared now as its one of our neighbours doing it, the cat was old and didn't stray out of the road so thats the only explanation.

There recently was a bit of drama over us selling our TV, neighbours over the road (with the cat) and the neighbours next door got into a bit of a bidding war and we eventually sold the telly to the people over the road. Two days later their cat suddenly died.

The neighbours we suspect of poisoning is the same house that our cat was locked in on Monday. We were calling our boy in for ages and there was no sign of him, he only came in after their door opened and he was bone dry despite it being really heavy rain. He was really spooked though when he did come home and it took us an age to calm him down.

What do we do? We have no real proof of anything but the indications are that our neighbour could be poisoning cats?

Goes without saying that my babies are staying in. ☹️

Mini that seems a heck of a jump to go from eldery cat dying to could of been posioned by antifreeze. Was it the neighbours that said this? Unless I'd spoken to the vet thmself I would eb wary of what your upset neighbour has said.

How horrible. I think I'd have to report it to someone, don't know who though. Might even be worth bringing the subject up with them, not accusing, just mentioning how terrible it is if you see them. Might make them a bit wary of doing it if they know poison is suspected.

Pitta it wouldn't have occurred to me before tonight but the neighbour is unhappy with both of us, their cat is now dead for whatever reason and our cat was locked in their house. I know we have no proof, it's just a eorry

When was your cat in their house mini? If it was today I’d be finding an emergency vet quick sticks if you think there really is a possibility that they are poisoning cats.

Sorry, my dizzy brain isn’t reading things properly! I’m not sure what you can do, but if it is a real suspicion then I’d get in touch with the rspca or police, it is against the law after all.

Did the vet not test the elderly cat for poison?

I'm just trying to be reassuring but now OB has scared me. I'd do what she said actually?

I didn’t read it properly P, I think Mini’s cat was in their house on Monday, surely poison would work faster than that?!

Oh no sorry, I'm not worried harrycat has been poisoned, I don't know why he was locked in their house though. The vet tested and said the organ failure could've caused by anti freeze but apparently that dosent show up in tests.

There's no real evidence just coincidence really?

Just looked it up, a BBC article reckons antifreeze poisoning kills within an hour. So your cat should be fine Mini but I'd definitely be keeping a close eye. Apparently it crystallises the kidneys. ☹️

It does look more like coincidence to be honest. I have no idea how you would go about proving it!

My advice - don’t p*ss off the neighbours!!

No I wouldn't say anything unless I had proof but I'm going to be cautious anyway. The weathers too bad to let the cats out anyway.

This happenned when I was little there was a pigeon fancier who lived in our road and he hated cats as they went for his pigeons. He poisoned about 5 of the cats in the Rd including my 6 month old kitten ☹️ I was only 7 at the time and was devastated. He got reported to the police in the end but I dont think things in the 80's were as strict regarding animal welfare etc so he was just given a slap on the wrist. Horrible fella he was like a big giant. Or he seemed that way to us kids...

Anyway as the others have said I wouldn't jump to conclusions and p off your neighbours when theres no proof, just keep an eye on things and keep them in.

This is honestly my worst nightmare, our kitten (he is almost a year old) doesn't go out, I am too scared anything will happen.. Irrational.

Our other cat is a little more streetwise (she left home once and turned up 3 miles away a week later at our old address, a little thin but unscathed!) so I am not as worried for her.

Just keep the kittys in till its all blown over, and keep an eye on the neighbours!

I really , really can not understand why the manufacturers of antifreeze have not been made to put something in it to make it taste/smell bad to cats! It is well known that antifreeze kills cats and that it tastes good to them. I worry about my two being poisoned accidentally, ie if someone spills some.

This is not veterinary advice but a vet in our local paper said that if you suspect antifreeze poisoning, vodka is the antidote (or might help at least) and as quick as possible. Sounds absolutely mad I know but we have a little bit of vodka in an old sprite bottle just in case.

Hope your cat is ok Mini, and that your neighbours are not really nutters!
