Centrepiece help!

Mrs C, 22 February, 2011 at 15:10 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hello all!

With not long to go I am finalising my table decorations. We have off white lanterns to go in the centre of the tables and some clear tea light holders and some turquoise crystals to scatter around. I am concerned that the lanterns will blend into the tablecloths and so need something to go underneath them to add a bit of colour and that doesn't cost the earth.

One option I thought about was round placemats or circles of fabric to add a bit of colour underneath these...

Has anyone seen anything in Turquoise Blue?

I did think about this but can't seem to find the right colour material - am probably looking in all the wrong places!

Hey Mrs C- a word of warning about those placemats if they are from Ikea. I have them on my dining table and they scuff incredibly easily, so they look scruffy about 2 minutes after putting them on the table!!

I'm having lanterns too. I got these from ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260616760770&var=560007908207&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_671wt_905

and plan on getting some dark blue pillar candles for them. I also have a navy blue table runner and a selection of some shells and pearl beads as I'm having a a nautical theme.

In fact, the lanterns arrived only ten minutes ago and I'm made up with them!!

Ooh ooh..... do you think it would look naff to have say a cake board (thicker than cardboard basically - maybe half an inch thick), with brightly coloured wallpaper/fabric over the top and edged in turquoise ribbon?

We are planning to have gingham squares on top of white tablecloths to add a bit of oomph, like the top left pic here (but in navy):

Could you do something like that? I like the cake board idea and think it would work, but depending on how big your tables are, you'd have to find a pretty big cake board, plus if you did round ones, it might be tricky to tuck all the fabric/paper around it neatly?

Much closer in colour Sherrie... I could have a different colour for the top table too to separate it from the rest?

Another possible idea is turqouise tiles? Depends how big you need them but you will have more chance of finding these in this colour than table linen etc at this time of year I would think.

I think it's hard to say without trying. The depth of the 'plate' bit on charger plates is usually very shallow isn't it? If you have some things to sprinkle over it too then that will cover up the plate a bit.

It's not as good as the plates but I saw this idea in a magazine... they used lace paper doilies spray painted purple or whatever colour you want??

Jane Asher sells 14" ones on her site for £2.95 for 4 so might work out quite cheap?
