Centrepieces - do you reckon I need some height?

Ohwhatatuesday, 23 August, 2013 at 19:19 Posted on Planning 0 18

Ok so to save budget for other things, we're thinking of not getting flowers (from a florist). I have lots of little square vases (about three per table) like the ones below and I plan to buy bunches of white roses&gypsophila for them - I've tried it and I think it works quite well and will be very easy to do/minimal cost. I'm not sure whether they're enough on their own so I was thinking of adding tealights but I'm worried I need height - our venue is a barn so v high ceilings and the table are quite small so I'm thinking they may get lost.

I've put pictures or the vase style/tealights and our venue.

What do you think - stick with the squares plus tealights or add some height - still using the squares with roses but maybe some candlesticks too?

Or any other cheap ideas? Appreciate your thoughts and opinions!

Venue

Vases are a bit like this (about 4X4 inches) will fit one rose head plus gypsophila

Hope that makes sense!!

Thanks Catshoes! Which one counts as the original idea? Just the vases with the roses on their own (I'm confusing even myself with all this!haha!

I like the square jars and tealights. I don't think you need height. People sat across from each other will be able to see each other then.

I had the same worries as you regarding height but in the end decided not to bother - I just had jam jars with tealights.

I like your original idea, either with or without tealights! You room is very pretty so I'm not sure you need to worry too much to be honest. This was mine so you can see some low centrepieces.

I do like the fairy lights around the beams in your room though!

People keep randomly mentioning height to me but being 4ft 10 myself I've never seen it as being of any great importance. I have a very similar venue to yours and am going down the jam jar route with flowers in some and tealights in the others. If there is anything too tall in the centre of the tables myself and my vertically challenged relatives won't be able to see each other.

I'm going to be controversial and say I think you need height. I think your original idea is lovely, but maybe you could do alternative tables with a taller vase, or add the candelabra as you suggested? If i'm honest I struggled to spot the centrepieces on the tables in the first pictures you attached. You could easily add height with your smaller vases, a tall candelabra and tealight grouped together, something like this (sorry if it's massive!):

    So many decisions hey!

    Thanks everyone!

Kharv - thanks so much for the pics - it's nice to see how it looks as people have been telling me I need at least a few tall things but yours looks lovely (love the look of your venue by the way - gorgeous detail in that room)!

Worried too much will make it look busy as there's already a lot going on in the room. (which Is one of the reasons we liked it because we knew we didn't have to spend to much to 'dress it'. Though my flowers might not look quite as cute as the pic as they'll be one ivory rose in each (so not much colour)! I think they look nice though!

I LOVE the fairy lights too - they're a permanent fixture which is great as I think they really help to give the room a nice feel!

I missed this one as I was replying! ooh this pic is very pretty! Yes so many decisions ? and decisions really are not my strong point! Maybe I'll do a bit of a trial run on our round kitchen table and some candles we have in the house vs tea lights and the vases and see what it looks like!

Icklefee - that's why I don't want anything to wide and tall as no one will see each other!

Kharv - hope you don't mind me asking, what's on your top table? Looks a little bit like ivy from the photo - it looks gorgeous so just wondered what it was/how you did it?

Ooh thanks - looks gorgeous I might steal the idea for our top table as it will tie it in with the ivy around some of the beams and help the top table stand out! Where did u get from? Sorry for all the questions!

We have the same venue as you DCM! Lovely isn't it? We're having hurricane vases filled with shells from all our beachy holidays surrounding a large church candle. No flowers. Not especially tall, about a foot I guess? They had set up a table to visualise it laid out for the day when we first visited it and they had laid out one of the vases they hire, not much taller then ours I would say, and it looked well proportioned. The barn is pretty as it is so we're not adding much to it either, just bringing two displays from the church service. When is your big day? Mine is just under a month away so be sure to check out my report and pics!

    here...

(haven't unwrapped the candle yet! Oops)

Your celings are so magnificent that they are a feature in their own right so whereas normally I would suggest height for centrepieces to create impact in a room with lofty ceilings, in your case, I think the celings would still win hands down over any tall centrepiece if you see what I mean!

I like the original idea of the square glass vase but personally I would leave out the single rose and just fill the vase with gyp cut short. If you particularly would like roses and gyp, then I would go for 3 roses as one looks a bit lonely..

I just asked my florist to do it - cost next to nothing! I got the heart from here: http://www.gtfloristsupplies.co.uk/drieddeco/hearts-wreaths/grey-heart-30cm-with-ribbon?cPath=250_310

Thanks Kharv! I'm definitely going to track down some ivy! And Rainbow Florists- thanks I will play around with some flowers and see how it works!

Stoice - how exciting! I haven't spotted anyone with the same venue on here yet! I love the venue! Will be very interested to see your pics and report - And will probably have about a zillion questions! We're not getting married until next May but its going very quickly!
