certificate

Hi

Do your witnesses sign the wedding certificate? Or are their signatures transcribed onto the certificate? Cant say im overly excited about this as i want my stepdad to walk me down the aisle and thought it'd be a good compromise to ask my real dad to be a witness but i cant say i really want his signature all over our marriage certificate :-(

thanks for any help

Erin

Yes, your witnesses' signatures are on the wedding certificate. They sign after you and your new husband have signed, to witness your signatures.

But that's not on the actual certificate you get given, is it? That's just in the marriage register, which the registrar keeps. Our certificates just have our names and the names of our witnesses handwritten on them by the registrar.

Hmm just checked ours. It's a church certificate (standard C of E even though married abroad) and it had our names, professions, fathers names, etc. Then at the bottom left of the certificate it says "this marriage was celebrated between us" and we signed, me on a top line, him underneath. On the bottom right it says "in the presence of" and both witness signatures. Now, it may be slightly different since as I mentioned, I married abroad, BUT it looks just the same as the certificate from my first marriage and others I've seen. Maybe my memory is faulty?

Curious - mine (civil wedding, but I don't know if the certificates are different at all?!) has the same wording, but our names are handwritten on there. We only put our signatures in the register book.

Signatures are transcribed onto the certificate by the registrar.
