Chairs...inspiration please!

Skeptical78, 3 June, 2013 at 15:17 Posted on Planning 0 17

OK, so I never thought I'd be *that* person who gets bothered about something as ridiculous as chair decorating- after all, they're just a place to plonk yer arse whilst eating / drinking, right?

Well.

I saw THIS picture (DAMN YOU PINTEREST) and now I have fallen in love with the idea of making the chairs at the reception venue look more 'deckchair-y'

The problem is, I haven't got the budget to spunk a load of money on ribbon (how frivolous!). But, THIS is what I have to work with...

?

Any ideas...?!

Why don't you try crepe paper streamers (ie. much cheaper than ribbon) or maybe look out for some suitably coloured duvet covers / pillows etc in charity shops you could chop into strips (you'd probably need to use pinking shears to avoid fraying)? x

? There is about 25 metres of ribbon on each chair!

How about some stripey deck chair-ish material made into cushions? Could sell afterwards / make them yourself to save money?

Or could you buy some bunting that is stripey/seasidey and then chop it into lenghts to tie to chairs?

Also a good idea, but maybe for the more industrious amongst us; I'm a lazy b*tch. ?

Funny how this wedding planning makes you suddenly bothered about random things like chairs isn't it? I would avoid crepe paper just because the dye tends to run if it gets wet but the duvet cover idea should work or try haberdashery remnants maybe? It really depends how many chairs you have.

We'll have about 50, so not a mahusive amount....thanks for the tip about crepe paper!

And yes. It is completely ridiculous. I mean, CHAIRS?! Come on!

Just thought the ribbons looked right purdy.

I don't have anything useful to add but I'm laughing because only a couple of months ago I was all " I'm not wasting money on something that people just plonk their a***s on" to spending more decorating the bloody things than my dress cost!

I threatened at one point to tell everyone to bring their own garden chair.... you could try that one?!

Couldn't find a decent pic, but you'd maybe only need 3 or 4 flags per chair:

To be brutal - I think crepe paper would look like you'd just tied crepe paper to the back of chairs IYSWIM. As someone said, the colours would bleed if it got wet, and stain people's clothes. Also it would rip easily if caught when chairs were moved about.

How easy / difficult is bunting to make...? Do you need a machine or can you hand stitch it? I have b*gger all to do most evenings so don't mind plonking in front of the telly with some sewing!

Bunting is super easy to make!

Buy (Asda / Primark etc) stripey duvet cover (s) and a pair of pinking shears (mine were less than £5 on ebay) and some bias binding (£4 for 33m ebay again)

Make a template out of card, draw round this then cut out with the pinking shears. If you iron the binding in half you can either use hemming tape to stick in flags or you could hand sew.

If you cut the triangles with pinking shears so they don't fray (amazon have cheap ones) then you could easily hand sew them onto ribbon or something. Its quicker on a machine I suppose and possibly more long lasting but you only need them to last a day. If you get fabric markers or something you could even write peoples names on the back of their chairs. Making place settings and favours of personalised bunting as well as pretty chairs. But I could just be being silly now ?

Brilliant! I'm off to fabric land on Weds to get some material; it's actually pretty cheap to buy in there, rather than decimating a duvet cover!

Thanks for all the tips! ?

I'll make sure I post pics when I've made some.

I made some bunting for my little girl, and after the first one, it was super easy. Even quicker with machine. Have you had a look in hobbycraft shop? They have full aisles for wedding stuff, including chair stuff. If nothing else you could get ideas?

    Hope this helps

How about those plastic strip blind things that people hang up in their kitchens?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-PLASTIC-DOOR-STRIP-CURTAIN-FLY-INSECT-STRIPED-BLIND-SCREEN-COLOURED-STRIPS-/370586721600?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Decorative_Accents_LE&hash=item5648b09d40

One of those should do 6 chairs maybe?

Oh my God, I totally forgot about these! They remind me of my nan! ? I suppose, yeah- if you cut them in half they could probably do 4-6 chairs apiece.

Might do some experimenting at the weekend, try out a few options.
