Champagne help/recommendations

Mwnci, 18 August, 2008 at 16:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I seem to have developed a bit of a fixation with Veuve Clicquot (nothing exciting just the Yellow Label) going from being practically tee-total (me) to drinking 3 or so bottles a week (between two of us)

At 30quid a bottle it isn't the cheapest of fizzy wines(!) (I know it's hardly Cristal but still!) so I was looking for some recommendations for cheapy champagnes/tidy proseccos up to around the £15 mark.

Thanks! Smiley smile

I am also a big champagne fan and drink lots of Veuve, but have also developed a genuine liking for Prosecco and can recommend some nice ones. Also, if you buy by the case you can save a bit and the non-vintage stuff will keep for a couple of months until you use it up. M&S Prosecco Raboso is a rose prosecco but not as sweet as it might look. Tesco finest also do a good Brut prosecco, which is dry enough and creamy enough to give you that proper champagne 'disappearing on your tongue' fizz effect and it's onlt about a tenner - woo hoo!

For actual champagne, Piper heisdeck is a fairly easy drinking dry fizz, although I'm not sure of the price. I find the green label nicer than the red / gold label non-vintage but that might just be down to personal preference.

Cordoniu is currently 1/2 price in Tesco - usually around £9.99 a bottle.

Lindauer is around £8 a bottle.

Tesco premier cru is around £15 a bottle.

I also love Veuve Clicquot it's my favourite bubbles! Although I do try others, I honestly don't really buy any other champagnes very often as Veuve is for me so much easier to drink. However, for a cheaper alternative, we drink loads of Roche Lacour, which we get from Laithwaites wine club. It's about £11 a bottle when you order a case of 6, and both years that they have are gold medal winners.

It's similar to Veuve in that it has similar 'honey' tones, and is not as acidic tasting as some of the other champagnes like Lanson and Moet, which I think is why I find it easier to drink.

Give it a go, it's lurvely (hic).

Keep an eye on Majestic as it's come down to £19.99 a bottle before now (often around Christmas).

I am rubbish at recalling names, I just remember the look of a bottle. Gallimard is a pretty decent one, I use it a lot for weddings, it's very easy drinking. Maybe try a private wine merchant locally as I get mine for around £13 a bottle.

Tesco do a lovely Prosecco, it's about £7 I think. See told you I was rubbish ?

I love Mercier and its a bit cheaper (but harder to find) - strangely saw it in Aldi a few months ago!

I saw an advert saying the Asda champagnes had just won awards but not yet tried them.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I'm going to have a fun few days/weeks! I don't know why I didn't think of a wine merchant, himself seems to view his as some sort of god (I don't know why he didn't suggest it to me, I'm guessing he wants to discourage my new found love of wine for financial reasons - he's finding it quite amusing anyway, I've gone from being disappointed that red wine doesn't taste of Ribena to drinking champagne at every given opportunity)

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way anyway, I should be looking for less drinkable stuff so I'm not so inclined to drink it.

Is it acceptable to drink prosecco/champagne/other fizz on ones own - he's away a fair bit these next few months, that said - it's good to do research so - I have the perfect cheaper fizz to celebrate his return right? Smiley smile
