Chances of becoming pregnant??

Little Lump, 4 September, 2008 at 10:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Hi All,

I've just got back from holiday and am really worried that I may be pregnant. My husband and I use condoms, but while we were away one of them split completely but we didn't realise until the deed was done. There were no doctor/pharmacy facilities where we were, so the best that I could do was wash very well and wait until we came home. Anyway, we've just got home and I've checked my diary - the day it happened was the 14th day of my cycle when I should be ovulating.

I can't do a pregnancy test yet as they only work 4 days before your period is due which isn't until Wednesday next week. I am so worried that I may be pregnant and I was wondering if anyone knew of the likelihood - has it happened to anyone else??

I love my husband to bits and we do want to have children in a few years, but this is so not the right time for us.

Obviously if you've had unprotected sex at the time you've been ovulating there is a chance you may be pregnant. As for how likely it is, well no-one knows, plenty of couples try and time sex for the right time and it takes them several months or longer to get pregnant, whereas others maybe only try the once or have a "mishap" and it happens for them right away.

Hope your period shows up soon. BTW, the early pregnancy tests aren't always that reliable - I used one 2 days before my period was due and got a negative, so went out and got plastered and it did turn out I was pregnant, so if you need to test you are better waiting till you are actually due.

OOPS just realised this is OT and not BT - you might get more responses if you post on BT.

Well you could be but then if you think how many people don't get pregnant on their first month of trying (an awful lot), you might well be lucky.

How many days ago did this happen? It must be so scary having to wait to pee on a stick to find out.

    Good luck. ?

Well it's possible. What is your usual cycle length? 28 days? If so, there's a good chance you'd have been fertile on day 14. That said, apparently it's only a 20% chance of conception in any cycle if you are trying to get pregnant. So, the chances are that you aren't.

TBH I'd try and wait until after next Wednesday to test. If your period arrives as normal, then you've saved yourself a tenner. If you test early (and 4 days before IS early) there's every chance a positive result wouldn't show up. If you read the small print on pregnancy tests it says something like "can show a positive result up to x days before".

I know it probably feels like forever to wait though ?

Thanks for the replys. I know that no-one can tell me that there is a definite X% chance, but I feel better offloading it!!

It happened a week ago yesterday, so it's too late to do anything about it now I'm home. I think that I have had slightly tender boobs, but to be honest I'm not sure if I'm imagining it!!!

I guess I'll just have to wait until next week. I felt fine about waiting whilst I was away, but now I'm home reality is starting to sink in and I'm starting to worry.

    I'll keep you posted!

If it only happened a week ago then it is likely too early for symptoms anyway. I did have incredibly sore boobs first time I was pregnant but it was only from a few days before I was due. ?
