Change of heart - dress, not Man!!!

Hello fellow brides to be!

Maybe some of you out there have had a similar experience to myself but I can certainly say that finding my 'perfect' wedding dress the most stressful & daunting experience of my life lol! I have now finally found the 'one' but have certainly encountered a few problems along the way which is where I need help!...

I few months back I rather quickly, without taking much time to think about it, ordered & paid a deposit on a dress from a large major Bridal retailer (I had to decide on that day, otherwise I'd loose the 20% discount available). Within a few days I was having doubts so called the shop to express my worries. They told me to go back with my bridesmaid & try it on again & take pictures, which I did. Still undecided I rang them again to see what my options were - they said that I couldn't transfer the deposit & I must decide by the 23rd April as the balance was then due (my wedding date is 29th Dec so this rang alarm bells as rather early I think!). I rang to cancel the order and to my amazement was told that I would have to pay another £400!!! I was shocked to say the least but apparently this was because I paid a 20% deposit (£236) and to cancel I had to pay 50%!!!!

I am utterly appauled that they wish to persue me (through the courts if necesary!) for another £400 when I was never advised of this previously and paid exactly what they asked me to. At no point did anyone advise me that I would be liable for any additional deposit.

This is certainly detracting from the happy, enjoyable experience of planning a wedding and as you all know, who can afford to loose this sort of money!!!

Any help or advice would be appreciated please!

Did you sign a contract when you paid the deposit? I'd check what is written on that with regards to cancellations.

Yeah did you sign anything that said you have to pay 50%? If not then they have no right to demand it.

I'd call Citizens Advice Consumer Service (basically the helpline for Trading Standards) if I were you, to find out what your rights are. If it turns out you are liable to pay that £400 then they could take court action, but it's worth knowing where you stand first! Their number is 08454 04 05 06. Good luck.
