Changing my surname advice

Forever&always, 16 March, 2014 at 19:18 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi, we have set a date for Sept 2015 and I'm thinking about booking our honeymoon soon to go to America. I was hoping to book it in my married name and as my passport expires in June 2015 I was going to change my passport then to my future surname. Can I do this without being married yet? At what stage do you officially change your name as I'm under the impression it's not done as soon as you sign the marriage certificate. We are planning on marrying on a Thursday and fly on the Sunday. I know I could get my passport in my current name and therefore book my honeymoon as my current name, but would like to travel as newlywed Mr and Mrs.

You can change your passport before but I think you need to get the priest/ registrar to sign something to confirm that you are getting married and the date. Your passport however will not be valid until the day you get married so you will not be able to travel between the date of your current passport expiry and the date of your wedding.

WSS. You can do it up to three months before. You download a form it from the passport website and then I just posted it to my registrar with a covering letter and SAE. It threw them a bit at the post office because I did check and send and they said they'd neverseen one before! I waited while they verfied it and it was fine. One week later I had it back. I wasn't going abroad until after the wedding so it was fine for me.

You won't be able to organise your ESTA for travel to the states until your passport is valid on your wedding date - you need to apply at least 72 hours before departure, so bear this in mind! Check this out - http://london.usembassy.gov/ukpapress91.html

I can understand why you'd want to do this as it sounds like a lovely way to celebrate your new name and your new life. But I would be scared that something would go wrong with the booking/flights/passport and that I wouldn't be able to go on honeymoon. There are enough things to think about without worrying if you've given the right name to the airline/picked up the right passport etc etc. I'm a worrier!

    Hi,

Can anyone help me! We are getting married on August 20th 2015 and are planning on having our honeymoon on September 12th 2015. But it is in Dubai and I have to change my surname as we are staying out there with family - we cant stay in the same room under their roof if we don't have proof we are married. I want to try and have a hassle free honeymoon so want to sort out my passport as soon as I can. Has anyone else had to do this? How much earlier can you change it and what do you need to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks

    Bex
