Changing name on documents - when?

Snailsandsushi, 25 January, 2014 at 15:28 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi ladies,

I noticed this topic in a different discussion and wonders what everyone else was doing.

I'm going to be double barrelling my name, but was going to leave the admin of changing all my documents until we came back from honeymoon (so I would effectively still be Miss D on my passport, but never mind!)

I was just wondering when everyone else was trying to fit this in?

I don't plan on doing anything until it's absolutely necessary I.e when things start to expire.

my passport expires in 2016 so I guess I'll start with that then...

I didn't think about this until too late, and we're going abroad about 4 months after our wedding. Stupidly I've booked it in my married name so will have to change my passport - I had no idea I'd have to pay for a new, full passport thinking I'd just be able to change the name for a lower price. I've got years left on mine too!

Ahh, glad I'm not the only one! I had a little moment thinking I had to change everything before going on honeymoon, but everything's been booked in my maiden name so all should be well!!

I get confused as I thought when you married your name changed and you had to have all documentation from that date in your new name ! Since being on here i have realised you can still travel in your maiden name but stil confused as to how you can keep documents in your own name till they run out when your name has legally changed, can any one tell me the regulations around this ? Im not sure how to change everything as there seems to be so much ( its the one most stressful part for me lol)

    Thank you x

There is no legal requirement to change your name with marriage and it doesn't automatically happen.

i work with female doctors who practice under their maiden name but out of work use their married. I'm still undecided what to do

Same as Pinkbutterfly - gradually! The only thing I'm wondering about is banks - obviously I'll change my name on the joint account but for my own current account, if I change it there do I need to change it at work (not planning to - far too much hassle!) so my salary goes in correctly?
