Changing passports

MrsBlackToBe, 1 February, 2012 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 11

We're going to USA for our honeymoon, my passport expires in 14 months and we wed in 10 months.

I'm not that precious about going on honeymoon as Mrs B on my passport so had planned to just wait until we get back however...

I have just realised that you need at least 6 months left on your passport to travel to USA!! Meaning that it will technically run out before the honeymoon ?

Just how difficult is it to change passport names before the wedding?

If it is a massive pain to do, my other option will be to renew my passport before the honeymoon in my maiden name and then again after the wedding!

Someone in the thread about travelling under maiden or married names said it was quite easy, just taking a letter from the registrar that you will be married with that name. I'd suggest checking that thread and asking that person specifically.

not at all!! pick up a passport form and the accompanying change name form from post office, you fillin half of form two, the vicar/registrer fills in second part, fill in passport form in your new name and voila, send off!! You can do this three months before the wedding date

I've also got a bit of a passport query which I don't know if anyone can help me with... My passport expires in 2015 and I will be changing my name in 2013 - will they automatically renew it with my change of name or will it come back to me still being 2015?

My Passports expires the beginning of march next year and i get married the same year but in may, the problem is that i have to have my passport renewed before we get married and there is no point in me renewing my passort in my maiden name lol. I have read a bit about that i can have my new passport in my married name upto 3 months before, but i don't know what happens or what i send off as with the passport as it will be in my married name before i even get married, would they ask for anything, proof even before i get married.

Anyone been in this situation before?.

    Any information/advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

You take in a PD2 form (which you can get from your post office) to your registrar/vicar and they fill it in, saying that they intend to marry you on whatever date to your groom of name X. You then send this off with your passport form up to 3 months before the wedding. The passport sent to you will have a start date of your wedding day and will only become valid then. Your old passport will be rendered invalid. If for any reason your wedding is cancelled then the registrar is obliged to inform the passport office who will put a stop on your passport.

So, if my passport expired in March, I would send it off at that time with the PD2 form so you'd get a new passport, valid from May (your wedding day). It is all explained in the forms you get from the post office.

    Hope that helps

Just a few things to note...

If you have 'time' left on your passport it may be worth waiting until it is due for renewal before changing your name otherwise I'm pretty sure you lose those remaining months!

I.E My name will change in Sept 2012 but my passport doesn't expire until 2015 so I'm keeping it with my maiden name until I need to renew it!

Also if you do this (like me) you need to book your honeymoon in your maiden name too, all travel documents MUST match!

    Hope this helps x
