Changing your name - where to start???

Gillsy, 16 March, 2010 at 14:39 Posted on Planning 0 15

Just starting to think ahead - where do you start with changing your name and do any OM's (or BTB) have a list of some sort as to who needs contacted etc??

Do you have to do it by deed poll, or is it just sort of done?

Also - little jen who did you use at absolutely beautiful?

No, no deed poll. You have your marriage certificate, so you use that as proof of change of name. Some people won't accept photocopies though, so you may have to wait for the certificate to come back from one place before you can send it to another, but it doesn't really mater how long it takes as legally you're entitled to use either name.

Also if you are registered with any "societies" or "councils" or "unions". I will have to change my name With the society of radiographers and the health professionals council! so anything like that.

If you are going abroad on honeymoon, you MUST make sure the name on your passport is the same as the name on the tickets! It is easier to leave the passport until you get back unless you want to use your married name to travel. Check the passport website for how to change your name before the marriage.

Thank-you for the links. They used to send the passport to the vicar and he was not allowed to hand it over until after the ceremony. Unless it is about to expire, it's probably easier to use the old one.

Also, for insurance....SOME companies may charge you an administration fee for changing your name (need to update motor insurance database & send out new docs) Not all do but some insurers will.

although going from single to married sometimes gives you a discount on insurance so may even itself out.

I think so (best to check though), but you would have to make sure any cheques you wanted to pay in are made out to the right name!
