I had forgotten about the Wheelies - they really used to freak me out. My friend had a fridge magnet with them on and I used to hate walking past it lol

The daleks and the cybermen on Dr Who. Apparently I used to insist we watched the programmes, but either hid behind the settee or on my dad's lap to do so!

The life meter thing on knightmare used to really freek me out. Also willow the wisp and the whole idea of being lost out on the swamp if you followed his light.

Ooh Zooropa, I used to hate that floating skull from Knightmare too- esp the bit where the eyeballs would roll about as they flew out the skull, argh!

I also feared Venger from the dungeons and Dragons cartoon, but not quite as much as the evil shadow demon, something about him scared the bejesus out of me.

Was no one else scared of Metal Mickey like I was? I had a nightmare that he kidnapped my mum out of her bedroom through the window...

I used to hide behind the settee during the Incredible Hulk. But I would always watch the end when he's walking away to that sad music.

Remember Chocky? That terrified me! As did The Day of the Triffids.

My brother was terrified of all witches particularly the one in Chorlton and the Wheelies and the Wizard of Oz.

I used to have really vivid, horrible reocurring nightmares about this bitch:

I'm sure that's why I have a phobia of the sea, in case she's down there! ?

I was always scared of the queen in Snow White when she turned herself into the old lady. It didn't help that she was old and dressed in black and white as every time I walked past a nun I said to my mum "She's a witch!"

Fingerbobs - the chap who narrated it and did the puppets gave me the creeps and he had a really creepy voice (or so I thought when I was about 5!)

    ? Me too.

Also, whilst not a character as such, 'Pipes' from Ghostwatch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostwatch) absolutely terrified me for weeks, if not months afterwards ?

Yes. Yikes that was some scarey programme.

They'd never get away with that nowadays!

Even my big butch Dad wibbled a bit at this.

Very late to this, but as a child of the early 70s, Rupert in those days was a puppet show. I was terrified of Raggety- in today's version he's rather sweet!

Edited to add this youtube link. Didn't watch the whole programme but you see Raggety in the opening credits- he's vile! It also shows me how TV has improved astronimically since the 1970s

Bagpuss. When it turned from black/white to colour. If I was naughty my mammy only had to say that Bagpuss was coming to get me and I was terrified,

~Another one for the child catcher from chitty chitty bang bang.

When I was about 26 I was working in Val D'Isere in france and my brother came out to see me and we were sitting drinking beer in a caff when I spotted the actor who played the child catcher. i thought I was being daft but whispered to my brother to look over in the corner and who did he think that was... My huge, butch rugby playing brother, aged 30 turned to me with tears in his eyes and whispered 'the....child... catcher' We RAN from the pub and to this day have told nobody about it!!

My daughter who is 5 now wakes me up on a nightly basis with worries about the child catcher... sigh...

I was scared of some things in books - Mr McGregor because he was going to put Peter Rabbit in a pie is one that springs to mind. I was also scared of a Topsy and Tim book where Tim sat on a balloon and it popped!

I was also terrified of crossing the railway after my school made us watch a film about a little boy that was playing on the railway and he got run over by a train and his feet got cut off.

The triffids scared the life out of me. There used to be a huge plant just outside the window of our hall and I was adamant that it would turn into a triffid one day. So much so I wouldn't go down the stairs into the hall when the light was off (you couldn't turn it on from upstairs) for years! Big plants still frighten me a little.. Eeek. x

The original Moomins. Totally scary. Just thinking about the title music makes me feel weird now.

Dungeons and Dragons - the bit at the beginning where they got "lost".

    Dr.Who

    E.T.

Worzel Gummidge was fine, but I had a scrapbook with his face on the front, and that scared me so much I asked my Mum to move it to another room.
