Charity donations instead of Secret Santa

Headless Lois, 10 November, 2008 at 14:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 47

We raised a lot of money for charity last year doing this, is anyone interested this year? If so I am going to make a suggestion that there is one charity instead of several and even further I am going to suggest that charity is Macmillan Cancer Support.

I am suggesting this because it was the charity that had by far the most votes over all last year. Also, reading threads throughout the year, there have been so very many posts were people's family and friends have been affected by cancer, it just seems that everyone is affected somehow.

However, am not suggesting anyone is 'told' what charity to support, I am just throwing this idea into the hat, if anyone is interested, and it is firmly based on last year's voting.

Yes and yes! Macmillan would be my charity of choice anyway, but i'm sure if anyone else has any other ideas they will speak up or forever hold their peace!

    Good call Lois. ?

I think it's a fab idea. And after the stirling effort you put in last year, collating all the nominations, and votes, and then updating the totals I don't think anyone can complain about just picking one charity! I'm all for it.

Yup, I'm up for it too.

I really enjoyed opening SS gifts from Hitched, though, it sort of symbolised the year round friendship Hitched gives me. Would anyone be interested in doing both?

Well, I am pretty sure that after all the selection process last year, we still donated more to Macmillan than the rest of the charities put together

I'd be up for that and Macmillan would certainly be one of the charities I might have picked.

That sounds really good, I think either Macmillan or Breast cancer care are great charities. ? But I'm happy to do SS as well...I love the excitement!!

I'd be happy with both. Macmillan are a great charity, but getting presents is fab ?

However, I understand that things are v tight for some people. (Not that I'm loaded anyway?)

Just to clarify, I have no interest whatsoever in Secret Santa, the charity thing was instead of (Sare's idea I think), and I am happy to set it up again this year.

Macmillan did fantastically well last year, although I seem to think we were something like £40 short of the £1000, so it would be nice to "beat" last year's record.

But then £960 is a great acheivement anyway, and the £2 donations soon added up.And a few people were incredibly generous in what they donated.

I think it was whatever people could afford, but yes most people paid a fiver and some people paid a great deal more.

There was discussion around ss being done as well as the charity donations though so am I missing why CD's post was funny?

I want to do both too ?

I know that this was a replacement to SS, but we could do a charity only OR charity + SS. I'd be happy to do the SS if others agreed.

I really enjoyed my Christmas Hitched SS present because, as I said before, it's a representation of my mates on here. I got ridiculously excited. For me it's not about the gift as such, as the fact that a 'stranger' thought of me, selected something, wrapped it and posted it. However, I wouldn't want the SS to undermine the charity one.

I would suggest £5 for the SS gift (plus postage) and £5 for the charity. I'd be happy to do both.

I know that, it was in reference to someone before me (I forget who) who had said they would like to do SS as well. I should have quoted.

That sounds OK to me. I didn't take part last year coz I wasn't hitching so much then, but I love buying pressies as much as getting them. And I got a really lovely warm feeling from everyone's generous contributions (and comments) when MF was in hospital.
