Dont know birmingham at all myself but work in the hotel industry. I would recommend using www.laterooms.com and then you can break it down into price order/city centre order/star rating order. On each of the hotels there is an option for customer reviews as well as photos. We as hoteliers cannot remove these reviews we can answer them so you get to see what guests did think. And with laterooms you get to book using a credit card as guarantee but pay on arrival so dont have it taken off your card right away.

If you are still not sure of a hotel search www.tripadvisor.com and enter the name of the hotel you are thinking about and you will get further reviews.

I use these weekly to search on our hotels and report back on them and they are the most valuable/reputable for us.

    Hope this helps.

    Sx

What sort of hotel are you looking for? city centre or quiet, near shops or nightclubs or restaurants?

Its for us going to the NEC for the wedding show, but we're making a weekend of it since H2B and I not had a break on our own for a while, so not too bothered around location, just need it to be easy to get to the NEC from and nice, but not over £120 ideally

Ok so I'd go for one in central B'ham. You can get the train really easily to/from the NEC from New street station (also saves hassle of parking at NEC - I went to the wedding show 6 months ago and it took ages to park and then walk to the show).

The hotels actually at the NEC aren't that great if you want to go for a meal and couple of drinks in the evening, whereas there are loads of hotels in the centre of Birmingham which are really close to some nice places to eat out etc. Also there is more opportunity for random shopping the next day (there is the confetti store there and loads of shops - I think better than London as fewer tourists and buses), including the jewellery quarter if you need any cheap but good quality jewellery - e.g. wedding earrings, necklace, rings...? (bought my engagement ring there for 1/2 insurance value).

The mailbox is nice, but might be expensive, there are a lot on broad street which cater for conference people so might be cheaper at the weekend, also they have opened a new radisson in the last couple of years which looks good from the outside. Anything on the hagley road might be less convenient. You should definitely be able to find one within the above budget.

Alternatively if you want somewhere just to chill there are a country house hotels around the villages south of Birmingham. You could look at some of the venues that are also hotels on here to see. Meriden is really near NEC and very pretty village (v good pub for dinners).

THE JURYS INN is nice it is on Broad street in the city centre close to all the best bars and clubs so it is lively outside but quiet in the hotel. It is a short drive down the A45 to the NEC or you can catch the train fron New street station and have a few drinks while you are there?

Hi, any one Broad Street would be good for you, I echo Jury's also Hyatt, and there is also a travelodge! you can easily walk to new st station fro there to get the train to the NEC, but drivings not that bad, you'll have to pay parking but i've been going for years and its not that bad!

There is a Malmasion at the Mailbox which is lovely but might be a tad expensive, im not sure of the prices, but eating and drinking in the Mailbox is alot nicer than on Broad St in my opinion. Its not that expensive, we ate in a restaurant least sat in the Mailbox and with a bottle of wine it was only £40ish.

Have a lovely time its nice now - i promise and shopping is brilliant. Also try and get to the Jewellery Quarter it is cheaper but there are so many shops they all end up blending into one! Nigel Lynell(i think) on the corner of Vyse St is wonderful and different we have used him a lot.

    HTH Enjoy xx

Hi, I am off to Birmingham today for my Hen Weekend, and really wanted to get a nice hotel that everyone could afford. Like you I dont know Birmingham at all, and in the end I have gone for the Crowne Plaza, it looks nice on the web site and has good reviews. If you book in advance they have club rooms, where you get complimentary drinks and canapes between 5.30 and 7.30. Unfortunately I left it too late and so have just got an ordinary room, but will let you know what its like after tomorrow if you like?

I stayed in the Days Inn hotel in The Mailbox, which I got through Laterooms for £25. It was a huge room with big bed and lovely shower room etc. Breakfast wasn't included but we were leaving early anyway. And it's very near the rail station.
