Cheap DIY centre pieces

Zozo222, 12 April, 2015 at 10:45 Posted on Planning 0 8

Morning all, we are getting married overseas and having an evening reception on a budget back home, I'd like to have some centre pieces for our tables. I saw these vases in ikea yesterday which are an absolute bargain - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00017133/

any ideas what I could do with them?! Has anyone else used them?

thank you Smiley smile

Other than real/artificial flowers sticking out the top, you could float flower heads under water in the vase with candles floating on the top. Have apples/oranges within the vase instead of flowers. I bought underwater lights from ebay, and also crystal accents- a type of powder you mix with water and it swells and gives the look of ice cubes in the vase. The lights come in various colours & are pretty cheap, yet give a brilliant look. I cant work out how large that vase is, but here are some other pics for inspiration:

Where are you getting married? Could you use that as a 'theme' to dictate what you put in them e.g. oranges if marrying in Spain, and they're also cheap!

Hmm, OK so Vegas is tricky, the only things I can think of are money, playing cards and poker chips! Not the easiest or cheapest options. Or you could get those big long plumage feathers in your wedding colours to remind people of show girls?

Paris- you could do croissants, a large French flag scrunched up to fit it in the vase, macarons (maybe a little expensive), I'll keep thinking...

The vase lights I was referring to are called 'floralytes'. I found 2 shapes (both come in various colours other than white). One type that looks like an LED tealight, can be turned on and off and reused. They come in 1 light bulb versions, also 2 and 3 bulb ones. I bought the single light bulb ones & that was sufficient to light up a really, tall vase full of water & gel crystals. The other type, is smaller & usually comes on a cord. Check the fine print whether they are single use, or one you can reuse. Another option is a plinth that either sits inside the vase or underneath it with LED lights in it. I found this the most expensive option though so didnt bother.

I'm going to use these in the bottom of our fishbowls

    http://www.festive-lights.com/battery-lights/colour-changing-submersible-tea-light.html

    - the same thing as Teal was showing you they're only 99p each from here and they even do a colour changing one!

I'm hoping to put the lights at the bottom with shards of rock glass over it to reflect the light in different directions, though I'm not sure how much that is or where I'm going to get that from!! My Step-dad assured me it wouldn't be that expensive but then he sometimes seems to forget that things aren't as cheap as when he was a kid!

Depending on when you're getting married you could have something seasonal like pinecones or acorns etc? And if you go and collect them yourself (with some help from friends and family of course) They won't cost you a penny!

With Vegas you could perhaps have a red and black theme for their contents - black and red glitter with lights, or black and red lights. Also you could fill them at bottom with glitter and then fill them at top with candy to match.

Also you could use three stems/sticks and stick playing cards on each stick and have those coming from the vase and fill it with black or red stones or lights.
