Cheaper Photographers, Videographer....

Nicoletta, 25 March, 2009 at 12:38 Posted on Planning 0 14

It is proving really difficult to find a photographer, videographer etc who does not charge the earth!! Has anyone come across somebody reasonable who does not add on loads simply because they hear the 'W' word??? The cheapest photographer I can find is a min £2,500+ for a basic package.

My wedding is in central London in October 2009. Any ideas/recommendations would really be MUCH appreciated.

    Hi Peter

I would really be interested - Do you have a website or anywhere I could view some of your work?

I am based in Kent and cover the whole of the South East. I don't have packages as such, allowing you to build your own package from as little as £350 for 4 hours coverage and the top end is around £1500 for 8 hours coverage and a handmade leather album (Italian Wedding Book style) with a CD of your favourite images.

    My website is here

    Hi Nicoletta,

You may want to try searching outside your area. I have met a lot of photographers through working along side them and have learnt that many will travel (Some are National). You might be finding that the cost are so high because you are only looking in and around London.

For my own wedding in 2007 I had Phillip Weaver. He did an awsome job and captured the moments perfectly for us. I can't vouch for his prices now but you might just want to check him out and see what you think. I'm not 100% on how far he personally will travel but again it's always worth checking these things. ?

I do disagree with this idea of charging a fortune just because someone works in a niche wedding market. Try taking a look at websites that also offer other private photography services (Parties, corporate events etc) and look for consistency in the prices.

Best of luck with your search and have a wonderful day.

They are based in London and do really beautiful wedding photogrpahy. They have an offer on right now for £500 - this gets you reportage coverage of before during and after the ceremony plus group shots and portraits and all the images high resolution on disc. You can just print them yourself and make up your own album.

Definatly look outside london. Its more likely the prices are higher because of the L word not the W word.

This is an interesting and common comment. The following is not a rant against the writer of this, its a reflection of the whole wedding industry. (Sorry Nicoletta, the following is definately not aimed at you, although you raised an important issue)

As a photographer of many years in the trade, I hear this accusation said many times. Perhaps some photographers do this, although generally and in the main I don't find this the case. What I aim to supply is a bespoke service to the client where each wedding coverage is individual and not a production line.No two coverages of mine are the same. I would then ask why some wedding dress manufacturers/designers charge more for "some" wedding dresses than many photographers charge for their photographic work on the wedding. These dresses are often from a "pattern" and many sell hundreds or even thousands of the same style. I rarely have seen dress manufacturers accused of the "W" word when it comes to their pricing.

Photographers worth their salt will spend a considerable amount of time working the digital files to get the best results from each image for their clients. Each file is different and not a known pattern similar in any way to that the dressmaker works to....Decent photographers are not in to mass production(if you choose right) and care explicitly about what they do.

Before anyone accuses me of being anti designer.....my mother was a designer/dressmaker for our current soveriegn, so these comments also respect her trade and opinion on this subject. (which in her case was bespoke and not production line)

Edited to add that although what you wear is very important, the wedding dress is for the day, the photography is for your lifetime.(Then I would say that wouldn't I???)?

I agree that looking ouside London can sometimes save you a bit of money. A lot of photographers charge quite reasonable rates for travel, so it probably wont add too much to any of their packages. Most take bookings via email and telephone, so it's easy to book someone further away.

I'm in Northampton and travel to London, so I thought I'd add my site to the list: http://www.annabravington.co.uk/

I'm a professional and experiened photographer and offer rates, much, much more reasonable than £2.5K.

It does of course depend on exactly what you want, in terms of books and prints etc, but most of my weddings work out at a shade under and grand, and that usually includes a beautiful custom, handmade album.

I'm based in Hertfordshire, just outside London and you can see my work here - www.photographybyriddell.co.uk

Think out of London is the way to go. Seen the following's works and they all look interesting too:

Court on Camera, Simon Carr, Gavin Woollard. I don't know how much they charge but I think from the weddings they've been at that they wouldn't be in the £2k + region - sorry if I'm wrong.

Saw some fantastic photography last year and when I asked about the photographer, my friend's sister said that they'd managed to get a fantastic deal £3k (a big discount on what they'd normally pay!!!!!?)
