Cheeky beggars or fair game?

decibelle, 29 April, 2009 at 12:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

A few years ago, some travellers 'moved' into the overflow car park of a local tourist attraction. The gates had been locked but they lifted them off their hinges. The locals were up in arms - it's a well-to-do area with lots of B&Bs and touristy things to do. The travellers were moved on fairly quickly and haven't returned since.

I just took a walk that way and they're back. Seven caravans, several dogs, kids' play equipment, washing hung out. Looks like they've settled in nicely. I was wondering how on earth they managed to get in as the gate has a sturdy chain and padlock on it. Turns out they simply lifted it off the hinges. Again.

Part of me is thinking 'cheeky sods' but a part of me is also thinking that if the company in charge are daft enough to left it unsecured then they only have themselves to blame. What happened to 'once bitten, twice shy'? The local council's travellers' site is well known to be full to bursting, of course people are looking for a place to stop. Especially such a nice spot, right by Loch Lomond!

But on the other hand, why would you want to stop somewhere where you are clearly unwelcome and it will only cause strife and bad relations? Why subject your family to that?

Whatever the answer is, I know what's going to be front page of the local paper next week!

Without getting into a debate about whether or not they should be there, I would suspect that they are treated as 'unwelcome' everywhere they go, and that locals are 'up in arms' at every place they stop, so I wouldn't think that this spot is any different in that respect.

I suppose that's true, Delia. I know they're not causing any trouble and they didn't do any damage getting into the site. It must be awful to have almost everyone against you wherever you go. I think I'm struggling to see what the attraction of such a life is.

But surely irrespective of damage done or not they are trespassing on private ground? Our local council does everything it can to stop them stopping at certain places and they just find ways around it. Sand in skips all over the site was one they tried - overnight the sand was removed and the skips pushed to one side of the site ?

I'm trying to remember the trespassing laws in Scotland - it's different to down south. I think it only covers walkers and things like that, though. So they probably are trespassing, if they are staying overnight. Although I think you can camp anywhere... Does anybody know?
