Cheltenham residents assemble here please

flailing wildly, 23 August, 2008 at 18:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Well, I've been here for over two weeks now, and I've found Waterstones, a nice Thai restaurant, where the cheapest petrol is at and all of the supermarkets ? Oh, and that it's hard to park in Montpelier Street when you really, really need a glass of wine, urgently.

Could I impose on y'all for recommendations in all the necessary areas? I'm really near the town centre (just off Fairview Road) so things that I can walk to would be fabulous.

Cheers m'dears.

    Let's see...

    • Hotel du Vin on Parabola Road does a most impressive afternoon tea (take some Tupperware to pack what you can't finish ?).
    • Brasserie Blanc at the Queen's Hotel has a nice relaxed atmosphere for ladies who lunch.
    • The Cheltenham Tandoori on Suffolk Road does 2 main dishes for the price of 1 on a Sunday evening. Yum.
    • The Cheeseworks on Regent Street (behind Cav House) is a mecca for cheesaholics.
    • Kitcheners is probably the best kitchen shop in the world (ok, slight exaggeration, but I love a good mooch round it).
    • Curry Corner on Fairview Road always did a fab lamb tikka masala when I lived not far from there. Probably still does.

My recommendations appear to be all food-related. Oops.

Reporting for duty! i have mainly been drinking pimms in montpelier gardens today but i'll try my best. (bloody civilised here)

gusto deli in montpelier is a dream and there is a cookbook shop in the street behind. copa is acceptable for wine drinking if you can't be bothered to get up to montpelier.

have you found tivoli yet? great butchers and deli, also old bath road.

dragonfly is a great thai as is the one on winchcombe street. the turkish restaurant on winchcombe street is also excellent.

if you need any continental and middle eastern foods there is a great Iranian shop also on winchcombe street.

obviously you must visit cheeseworks (near the everyman theatre).

parkers bistro in the 'hotel on the park' on pittville park is great and very eccentric, the bar is nice as well but obviously pricey being an eccentric hotel bar.

how are you liking it here?

Super, thankyou! Liking it well so far, although I've really not had any time at all to go and have a look around. I have the time this weekend, but alas, not the money ?

The Thai restaurant on Winchcombe Street was the one I went to (also the Chinese on the other side of the road, the Golden Mountain?). I think the Thai has just been taken over as it was a bit chaotic to say the least, but the food was good and they massively undercharged us ?

So if I don'twant to trek up to Montpelier, what are the nice bars in town to go to? I've only been to Revolution, which was NOT nice ?

FW - where do you live? I live in the exact location you've described. (perhaps PM me if you'd prefer not to say it on here)

The Storyteller is good for relaxed dining.

The Thai Bistro is our favourite Thai.

The Kemble pub is a decent enough local. The Fiery Angel is good (different).

Curry Corner was refurbished last year and does fantastic food. Service can be a bit slow though. The Eurasia is a good decent curry house too.

The Lloyd Pharmacy in the St Paul's medical complex opens until 10pm, which is good to know.

I live so close to the Golden Mountain that it would be embarrassing to get them to deliver, I think ?

I live next door to the One Stop (fab fab fab for dashes for booze in your slippers). Does that help figure out where I am?

Bars wise we only really bother with Copa (down the street between new look and some phone shop towards the everyman). Dr L says 'the swan' but i don't know where that is, he's obviously never taken me.

St George's tavern for real ale, but we don't know if we'd trust it at night ?

The Italian chain place neat waterstones is ok.

The only other place really worth a visit is the Parrot, near the job centre - purely for entertainment value. quite often there are very few customers but the owner and his wife have great stand up rows while drunk in the middle of it, once she tried to sack the chef but he was the husband's best mate, makes it a bit tricky to get up and go to the bar if you want another drink.

bit lacking in the town centre actually..

Wow, I live literally round the corner from you. Are you in one of the flats? I viewed one of those when I first moved to Cheltenham but ended up buying a little house just round the corner. It's a great place to live.

Whoo, hello neighbour! Yes, I'm in one of the flats. It's v small but nice - a bit of a culture shock from my huge Victorian factory conversion apartment in Northampton! All my rough hewn furniture looks weird in here ?

    Wow, yes, I bet that's a bit of a difference ?

There's a fab coffee shop for Saturday lunches (they do pasta and things). It's called La Scala and it's on the same road as the everyman theatre. You walk past the Everyman (on your left), keep going, past the entrance to the Regent arcade, and then you'll see some stairs down on the left to La Scala - we love it there.

Fab. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone - I'll make a list and go around putting them on my mental 'where it's at' map. I've got people visiting next week and I need to be able to take them somewhere that isn't Revolution ?
