Ok, to be totally thick-can anybody explain to me why people say respectively after they say someones age?

They don't - but they'd say: "Karen Matthews has five children: Shannon, Porsche, Primark, Macflurry and Kidnap, aged 9, 7 ,6, 3 and 18 months respectively" - it's a way of indicating that the order of saying one thing is the same order as the other. IYSWIM.

Or, "I bought a Christmas tree and a pair of shoes, from John Lewis and Aldo respectively."
