Are you talking about the ones you let go and fly off in to the air or the room decoration lanterns?

They are really nice if your venue will allow it really good for pics as well and its a lot of fun gives something for your guests to get involved with as well.

if you live or are near the coast you need to tell the coast guard as well what you are doing as they get confused with emergancy flares. Not sure if its the same for mountain rescue if near that sort of area.

I have seen the at a few weddings. They do look lovely when they work properly! Unfortunately they tend to be rather temperamental and land in trees etc whcih I think is why a lot of venues won't allow them.

I have been umming and ahhing about this since I saw a post about them being dangerous on here a few months back. I had bought 100% biodegradeable ones (completely without wires/bamboo) and my venue are fine with it and people let them off around there all the time. But I'm still not 100% convinced. I think they look fab and I really want them, but I'm super scared now.

Thats where team work comes in, if the 2 of you control the one lantern and make sure you releise it in to the wind then you shouldnt have any problems

We're gonna get them and give it a try anyway, the venue allows them and i think we'll only be gutted if we dont...ill not be the one letting them go though!

I really like these too was thinking of having one for me & H2B & one on each table so there would be 8 being released but haven't checked with venue yet! I saw somewhere that if you've within 5 mile radius of airport you need to let the local aviation authority know just in case this applies to anyone x

Jumbly - by the sounds of it, your lanterns are going to be horse/cow/sheep friendly and so I dont think you have anything to worry about, theres nothing there for them to chew.....

I'm very jealous. Originally we were looking for a venue that would let us let off fireworks but none we looked at would allow it & this venue (that we booked) suggested we let off lanterns as a nice alternative, even told us that she'd let them off at that venue for her wedding. Fast forward 10 months & when we talk with our venue about timings for the day we mention the laterns only to be told that we were't allowed to release them ☹️. As you can tell I'm still gutted that we can't have them but I hope you enjoy them!

Hey blackkat. I remember you saying about this last time we had a post about lanterns. That's so rubbish and such a shame that they can't change their minds back.

We had lanterns but nearly set people on fire, nearly set the venue on fire, had lanterns land on the grass and nearly cars, stopped cars on a main road and whilst they looked great boy was it dangerous.

We had the best of intentions to have people in charge of one lantern at a time but it was manic and people were finding lighters from everywhere and trying them themselves and the wind can make them really really dangerous. So even if you have responsible people in control of them you can't help where they go with the wind. It was the wind that made ours really dangerous.

Sorry but in hindsight I wouldn't do it again unless I could maybe afford a professional company but then the wind still does it's own thing.

Another hitcher, Spring, had the lanterns at her wedding but the company they hired weren't able to set them off because it was too windy so I bought them off of her. It was such a shame she paid for the company and then they couldn't use them. x

I really wanted these too but the venue wouldnt allow it and when they explained why i felt a bit stupid for even asking! they do cause a lot of damage/risk/upset to locals and farmers, we are also having fireworks but arnt allowe anything that bangs.

Fortunately our venue has a lovely lake outside so I am hoping to buy water floating lanterns that we can use whilst the fireworks are going off too Smiley smile just an idea, might not work but in my head it looks lovely, lol

Chinese lanterns do look absolutely superb - we worked at a wedding in April where they had them. If you do have them though it is best to make sure a few people know what they're doing with the lanterns to make sure there are no disasters! Our bride bought them from here - http://www.skylanternsonline.co.uk/19-metal-free-eco-sky-lanterns - they are the cow-friendly biodegradable versions, and you can also get a big heart shaped lantern to set off yourselves. There are some photos in our latest gallery on our website if anyone wants to have a look. Luckily it was a very still day at that wedding, but I could see how any breeze may cause them to go astray!

    Ali x

There were some released at a wedding we went to last year. The one me and OH set off nearly set fire to a tree...... As a result I think everyone else was more interested in the potential fire than watching the ones that did work float away!
