Chip and pin in the USA?

Cheeky Chops, 31 March, 2008 at 21:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Am off to Boston soon and am wondering if the US use chip and pin?

I dont have a pin for my CC (to stop me using it) but need to take it on hol (in case I need it).

Any ideas?

No chip and pin - you sign for everything.

Just as BGB said you sign (electronically is lots of places) for everything no chip and pin.

Some shops require photo ID if youre using a UK credit card too so driving licence or passport needs to be kept with you in case youre asked for it. I got caught out a couple of times without and had to leave my purchase behind.

WBGBS. Most places don't even check the signature against the card. There are only a few places that I've had to use a PIN, but that's been with my debit card rather than CC.

    What barongreenback said.

You don't need a pin. You sign for everything.

If you use a debit card, you enter your pin but for a credit card, you sign.

This country never ceases to amaze me. They are terrified about identity theft hance things like direct debits are practically unheared of as it means giving someone your bank details but then are utterly lax when it comes to checking signatures on credit cards or using other security devices. Many people still carry a reasonable amount of cash for example.

Like others have said, credit card you sign. US based debit card you use PIN, but overseas debit card you usually sign. In some places they may ask you for ID as well.

Have fun in Boston! Its a great city (maybe I am boased because I live there!). Give me a shout if you need any tourist info / restaurant/shopping recs!
