Chip shop vinegar

Diamond Star Halo, 14 April, 2008 at 13:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

What is it that makes chip shop vinegar so much nicer on chips than ordinary malt vinegar? Is it just watered down a bit or something?

Sarsons always seems to taste really strong in comparison, and if I bring chips home for Mr DSH, he always complains that there isn't enough chippy vinegar on them, so I want to know how to do it myself.

I find it the same with chippy brown sauce. I don't like the normal HP or other brown sauces but love the one from the chippy.

I think chip shop vinegar is just watered down malt vinegar.
    I prefer the full-strength stuff!

Maybe some chip shops water it down for poncey southerners who are used to balsamic this, and white wine that type vinegars, but here they have vinegar that rots your insides and could descale a kettle in seconds.
    Bloody lovely stuff it is?

Most fish and chip shops use "non-brewed condiment" which is a solution of acetic acid in water with caramel added for colour

My bro used to work in the village chippy and one evening a bloke came in complaining "Your vinegar's diluted isn't it? I'm going to write to [no idea who he thought he'd write to but there you have it]".

Bro explained that yes, it was diluted 10:1 with water because otherwise it would dissolve the plastic bottle and quite probably the bloke's hand. Muahahaaaa!!!
