Chiropractor

So went for my first visit to a chiropractor today.

A bit of history. I've always had trouble with a sore neck and headaches and a couple of years ago was sent for an MRI of my head and neck (for the headaches). The only thing it showed was that my c3 and c4 are fused together, was told from birth and that as a result I didn't have the same flexibility in my neck as most people and that this was the likely reason for my headaches.

Unfortunately I wrote off my car a year ago and suffered a bad whiplash injury and still get terrible pain in my neck from it. Much grumbling later my OH booked me into a chiropractor today to see if he could do anything (I'm a typical nurse....didn't do anything about it on my own, just tried to muddle on...but with much moaning!)

Went along and after an examination was told my neck is misaligned at 2 points and manipulation would definitely help....5 sessions of gentle treatment. So I put myself in his hands and he done the whole crunching my head to the side a few times, and I have to say it was quite satisfying!

Was told to expect to feel uncomfortable for a few days as though I'd had a heavy workout at the gym. As the day has went on I do feel sore in my neck and quite stiff but also as though I've got achy run down coming down with a cold type of feeling....I ache all over and feel sluggish!

So my question is this, has anyone else experienced this after manipulation treatment, with the flu like symptoms? A pointless question really but interested to know if that's kinda normal and if anyone has had success with this type of treatment. Fingers crossed it works for me! xx

    Hi LHMM,

I've been regularly seeing a chiropractor for about 6 years now but have recently gone to a different practice for different treatment. I'm currently half way through an intense 12 week course on my neck and back. When I first started going years ago it took me few sessions before I didn't feel sluggish afterwards, I think they said it is something to do with receptors/nerves that are trapped and don't work so our body feels like it's doing overtime when they start working again.

I love a bit of neck crunching! I have to do it myself several times a day (along with a lot of other joints!) but the chiropractors gets the nitty gritty ones!

I hope the treatments work well for you and your headaches reduce. X

Ah that makes sense about the nerves and receptors! Found the whole thing quite interesting, fascinated at how he could tell so much with such little physical contact!

Thanks so much for the reply, at least now I know it's relatively normal to feel this way Smiley smile xxx

    You're a nurse? Don't you 'do' evidence-based medicine?

I've not been to a chiropractor, but have been to an osteopath who after successful treatment of several different issues, I trust implicitly with my joints!! Never felt sluggish though?

Yup I'm a nurse. Not an orthopaedic one though or one who has ever come across anything remotely to do with this. I was basically asking the questions because whenever I'd brought up the subject of a chiropractor in the past the idea was rubbished by my (non nursey) colleagues and they were accused of being "a bunch of quacks"! I'm afraid in my training we didn't touch much upon all the different branches of care.....it was mostly medical and surgical. And whenever I've had a wee nosey online at neck manipulation there seems to be oodles of information and studies on how it can lead to stroke...which is worrying! xx

ETA....yes I did have a look at some online info, but I quite like to also ask the opinion of others for comparison. I'm not a member of any other forums and none of my family and friends have visited a chiropractor so I put the question on here. And it was my OH who made the appointment for me because of my excessive whinging and no taking action, hehe! He went back to work on the rigs on Thursday night and handed me a note before leaving with some information on it including the appointment time "Friday (tomorrow) at 10am", so not much time to prepare or back out Smiley smile xx

Thanks Mrs C.....feel much more like myself today! Just felt very run down last night and wasn't sure if it was just down to coincidence or if there was a connection. Smiley smile xx
