Choosing wedding venue - Please help!

Perfectionist, 12 September, 2011 at 23:05 Posted on Planning 0 14

I would like a wedding venue within England because it would be much easier for all of my friends to attend the ceremony. I had my heart set on Queen Elizabeth Court of the British Museum but they do not have a wedding licence, then the National Physical Laboratory, they don't have a wedding licence either (despite the fact I offered to purchase one for them!) I liked the idea of Westminster but we are scientific-atheists! (So, out of the question).

I am looking for a venue which is either gothic (cathedral or chapel but without the religious ceremony requirement) or an industrial venue (e.g. power station).

We are an engineer and a scientist so we want something unusual and symbolic of the dedication we ascribe to our professional roles (which we both enjoy).

We have began planning a wedding early to ensure that everything is as ‘perfect’ as it can be for us and as memorable and entertaining as it can be for our guests.

I never thought that I would get married (neither did any of my family!), so I have never even taken a miniscule interest in this sort of thing before and am utterly clueless with regards to organisation!

Need help with just about everything but I’d like to begin with the venue.

Thank you for reading the post.

Where abouts do you live Perfectionist? In Manchester there is a beautiful place called The Monastery https://www.themonastery.co.uk/

this was my dream venue but it was just too big for us to be able to fill. It's an old Monastery which went derelict and then someone bought it and nursed it back to health bringing back a lot of the old features. Its like a cathedral - but is licenced for civil ceremonies only.

If it's not too far for you, you should take a look - definitely ticks the gothic box!

    Smiley smile

    xx

Excellent! Thank you very much xtine88xx – this looks perfect! I had been trawling the Internet (what with my ineptitude regarding these matters) and found myself a bit discouraged. I had not been a member of this website community but an hour until you replied with a brilliant suggestion. (I’m actually despairingly picky sometimes, so you have my absolute respect!)

I was just gonna say, you can get married anywhere at all you like with no license if you go for a humanist, but if its in England then sadly it won't be legal til you then visit a registry office and make it official.

We're having a humanist ceremony but in Scotland where its all legal

    Hello,

This is my dream venue but was a little out of my budget and a bit far for my guests to travel:

Good luck with the venue search x

Natural History Museum? Although it is only available for receptions... Looks bloomin cool though :o)

    https://www.nhm.ac.uk/business-centre/exclusive-events/private/weddings/index.html

Same for The Science Museum... also cool - appeals to the physics teacher/science grad in me :o)

    Imperial College in London:

Sorry, all very London based, but the idea could equally be applied to anywhere else in the UK, maybe one of Cambridge or Oxford Colleges?

This venue is a former steelworks in South Yorkshire - haven't been for a wedding so can't comment on that.

Why not come down to the Garden of England - Kent. We have some fantastic venues... Eastwell Manor in Ashford being one of the best I've photographed a wedding at!

Depends where you are happy to travel to but in Manchester you could either try:

MOSI ( Science and industry museum)

Or Gorton Monastery - Which is absolutely stunning! I went a while back and was told that it had lots of weird windows, and they couldn’t understand why, and it was so when the sun shone on ( e.g) St Georges day the light would shine through a particular window onto the St George! defiantly worth a look!

Most of these are only available to alumni or people with a connection to the college, certainly for the chapels. More and more are becoming licensed for civil ceremonies though, so it might be worth a try.
