Christmas Markets - Any rec's?

Oompa-Loompa, 9 August, 2009 at 20:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Sorry for the early use of the C word! My mum, sis and I are thinking about planning a long weekend to a Christmas market, but I havent really a clue where to start!

I have in my head that the best ones are in Germany, but I don't know if I've just made that up?! Has anyone been to any and got any recommendations?

I was thinking Europe but I wouldn't be adverse to a good UK one.

Any suggestions? And if you have, any suggestions for accomodation?

Thanks x

Vienna is gorgeous and has a few markets. The main one in front of the town hall is great.

We stayed in Le Meridien. I think it was fairly pricey but the location was fab and the bed the most comfortable I have ever slept in.

In the UK, Edinburgh has one in Princes St Gardens and they have an ice rink and funfair too.

My parents have done one for the last few years, if memory serves me correct they've done Monchou (sp?), Cologne and the latest one was near Ypres.

They've always really enjoyed them. I *think* there's one in Chester isn't there?

I'll look on the tour operator website and see if they list this year's ones.

Husband and i went on a christmas market holiday years ago on a coach.

from what i can remember we went to quite a few but can only really remember Frankfurt being disappointing and over priced, bruges was o.k. we stayed at a hotel in rudesheim and that had a christmas market which was lovely

    http://www.germany-christmas-market.org.uk/ruedesheim_christmas_market.htm

i'd definitely recommend going as it really is quite magical.

Birmingham has got a good christmas market, you stay in brindley place and also go to one of the restaurants there. Cielo is lovely.

Brum is really good for shopping aswell, selfridges, the bull ring etc.

but if i were you i'd go abroad.

here's the brochure page, a few are listed and they're always good. Rudesheim, as blimey has mentioned, is listed as one of the best.

We went to Vienna a few years ago which was lovely, it's a really nice city too. We stayed in a great hotel, the Altstadt https://www.altstadt.at/en/altstadt-vienna/index.html They did lovely coffee and cakes in the afternoon

In this country I agree the Birmingham one is good

I love the Prague Christmas markets. I love Prague at that time of year. And I've never come across a single stag/hen do or lager-louty type group at all. (perhaps because I have only been in December ?)

Bath also have a reasonable Christmas market, if you want a UK one.
