Christmas -v- Xmas

HeidiHole, 24 November, 2008 at 11:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 123

Shall we get this one out of the way early this year? To make room for the other annual threads?

Tomorrow we could do:

When should you open your Advent Calendar? or Farm or Supermarket Turkey? I think we should have one annual thread a day in the run up to Christmas, just to spread them out a little.

Anyway, it's Christmas for me, Xmas makes me shudder.

I hate Xmas, it is so wrong. And at a slight tangent, I hate the way in which some local councils (mine included) call christmas the 'festive season' or 'holiday season' so as not to offend people who do not celebrate christmas. Christmas is christmas, it a festival celebrating the birth of Christ, so why should it be renamed? I just don't get it. or is that another thread entirely?

Xmas is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Has to be Christmas.

And I hate the 'happy holidays' sentiment too. What about all of us wot doesn't necessarily have any holidays at this time of year?

We could have a thread on themed trees vs just chuck on whatever decs you've collected over the years.

Or, GMT, we could have 'Real Tree -v- Fake Tree'. That's always good for a few pages ?

It's Christmas and surely you open your advent calendar on 1st December or am I missing a vital point?

Really? Well some people really do have too much time on their hands lol!

Actually we're debating real v fake this year at work. The boss really doesn't want to put a real tree in his lovely car and I couldn't give a flying fig as long as we have a fecking tree sometime before the 24th.

It's father 'missmuss' in our house ?

Why the *** have they decided to make 32 day "Advent" calendars? The period between Christmas & New Year ISN'T FRICKING ADVENT!!

Christmas rather than Xmas, unless piping it onto a small cake when your wrist is already achey. ?

    (I'm kidding)

I don't particularly mind Xmas. My Mum hated it as she thought it was people who couldn't bear to have 'Christ' associated with Christmas, so used Xmas instead, but my Dad (who has studied Greek) explained about the greek letter 'X' being used a symbol for Christ.

For people with hundreds of cards to write, putting 'Xmas' instead of 'Christmas' saves you a whole 4 letters a card...

I'm even lazier - I buy cards which already have the greeting printed inside, so all I have to do is sign my name.

AH, but is it perhaps a non-denominational Christmas and new year "countdown calendar"?

Which also raises the question of "What does Ben 10 / Bratz / Thomas the Tank Engine / Bart Simpson have to do with Advent" question.

Its Christmas, but I can just about deal with Xmas, as long as you don't actually say, just write it.

Advent calenders are opened in the morning, but I can see why people find that a bit wrong.

    Trees are real.

Turkey from the butcher if you even have to eat turkey at all (another deabate).

Decorations up mid-december and updated a wee bit, but not changed for entirely new ones every year.

Good idea to get it out of the way, Hole.

Christmas here. I can't stand xmas.

I prefer real trees, but in other peoples houses. We have two fake ones here. Can't be dealing with the mess. Did have a real one two years ago, never again.

I loathe tinsel. Especially tinsel over mirror, pictures etc.

You'd hate our house then. My husband, who normally has good taste and likes minimal ornaments, seems to lose his good taste sometime in December and doesn't get it back till New Year's Eve. I usually come downstairs one weekend morning to find him hanging tinsel over the mirror or sticking things to the ceiling with sellotape ?

It's Christmas for me, although I'm not especially bothered by Xmas

    Trees are real

Meat (not turkey) from the butchers, never the supermarket

Advent calendars in the morning, although I usually forget these days anyway

Definitely Father Christmas in our household

    Christmas isn't about taste!

My stepdad covers every downstairs surface in tinsel, balloons and crepe paper, and every outdoor surface in lights, and finishes it off with a 'Santa Stop Here' sign just by the front door. When queried, he claims "it's for Lora". My sister is 26, left home several years ago, and could care quite a bit less than that about Christmas decorations. ?
