Christmas/winter weddings

irrelephant, 26 November, 2008 at 15:05 Posted on Planning 0 40

Just wondering how popular they are and what kind of colour schemes people prefer. I was thinking ivory burgundy and gold and more traditional decs and favours. OH wants lots of icy colours in a sort of winter wonderland theme.

What do people think?

I love the burgundy and gold idea, very nice colours, which look rich and luxurious.

If I hadnt been able to get the date in July we were going to go for a winter wedding.

Mmm thats what i thought. i was thinking lots of fairy lights and mistletoe and holly and ivy and pillar candles as table centres.

Mr delicious was thinking lots of snowflakes and icicles, that kind of thing. Then again he's also not sure he wants winter wedding anymore, as he threw in an idea about spring this morning. sigh...

Well I dont think you can get more romantic than having fairy lights and misletoe do you?! Go for it, it sounds perfect.

I'm getting hitched in Nov next year - does that count as winter? If it's as cold as today then I reckon so!

I'm going for navy blue and burnt orange as a colour scheme which sounds horrid, but looks great!

That's what I thought - I used the green one on my wedding day (H has bought it and it said something about New York on it and we were going there on honeymoon so I kept it for the wedding) and have a huge picture of it in our wedding album and thought it was a weird coincidence if it was ?

Not sure if you can see it but there it is anyway ?

I got married 3 weeks ago and my colour scheme was ivory (me and FGs- + they had a choc brown sash), choc brown for BMs and burnt orange (flowers, table decs etc). It worked really well-have seen some gorgeous pics of that colour scheme on here (including my own if I do say so myself!!!)

I am getting married on sat and my colours are black, ivory and silver, so probably more winterwonderland than christmasy.

The cakes are individual snowballs (round chocolate brownies coated in white chocolate)

Table decs are black vases with white roses and some sparkle, on mirrors with tea lights and table diamond thingys.

My dress is black and ivory, fg's ivory and bms silver.

Favours are bottles of cava, the black bottles, I have written on them with a silver pen and decorated with sparckly stuff and silver ribbon.

    Kids have silver party bags.

We are having a late ceremony (4.30) with a drinks reception for 57 people and then an evening do with another 100 and a hog roast!

    Just waiting for snow now!!!

We are having a new years eve wedding in 2009 and am just toying around with colour schemes, i know i want my dress to be a very pale gold though. And was thinking a deep olive green or deep purple for the bridesmaids (all have lovely olive skin so will look nice!). H2B wants a dark suit, i am trying to persuade him to get a deep chocolate brown but he is not convinced hehe...

I want lots of fairy lights and candles too. Our venue is quite grand so will just be having very simple table dcorations.

We photographed 3 weddings over Christmas last year and they were magical. 2 of the weddings went with the red/burgandy and gold theme with holly. The brides both had gold/ivory dresses with fury wraps.

The other wedding went with a gold, cream and chocolate brown. The room looked beautiful with a log fire and the garlands across the fire places of the venue.

    They all looked lovely.

I got married at the end of November, and we had ivory, gold and silver as our colours. The hotel had a fire lit in the bar area and a huge christmas tree in their too. It was lovely.

My bouquet was ivory roses and ranunculas with singapore orchids, and my bridesmaids carried handtied posys of ivory roses and ranunculas, and eucalyptus.

One of our friends got married between christmas and new year, and they had deep reds and gold as there colours. They got married in a castle and it was gorgeous. Her bouquet was deep red roses and berries, and her bridesmaids carried ivory roses with berries, they were wearing deep red.

Another of our friends is getting married between christmas and new year this year, and she's having a winter wonderland theme. Lots of sparkley twigs in tall vases in the tables, christmas trees with just white lights in the corners around the room, and mistletoe. Lots of ivy and candles in the church too.

    I love winter weddings!

We got married 14th December last year (and i can't believe our first anniversary is almost upon us!!).

Our colour scheme was blue and silver - we had a very rich midnightblue (e.g. BM's dresses), a pale pastel blue (gents waistcoats etc, under a charcoal grey suit) and silver accessories. We then carried these themes through with our tables etc. It was really effective, and we went with the snow / ice type theme too (snowflakes on the invitations etc).

We worked on a wedding almost 2 weeks ago now where the bride went for a winter wonderland theme. main colours were white and silver with hints of black, lots of sparkle and fairy lights.

we used tall vases filled with silver twigs with fairy lights intertwined, a large white xmas tree with black and silver decs which proved very popular for photos throughout the day

smaller versions of the tall vases were on the tables as centrepieces, all the place cards had little snowflake charms on them and i themed the tables around lines of the song "winter wonderland" and the table names all had snowflakes on and the table plan was done the same

i've got plenty of pics i can send you for inspiration if you want to drop me an email

    Hiya Delicious,

Firstly I just wanted to say.....wow......I'm impressed hubby to be even has his own opinion........mines only interested in the music and that's it.......which works out well for me as I'm a control freak anyhow ?

But why don't you both compromise and then you can have a blend of the two. That's what we doing.........getting married on 29th dec. I was careful to think that guests would be xmas'ed out by then anyhow.....but wanted my theme to compliment the venues own setting and decor.

I've gone for a warm ivory, deep red (but not burgundy.....more a luxury santa red) and a hint of silver. The majority of the colour is ivory with just a splash of red here and there and then a hint of silver to add some sparkle and keep it wintery. Our venue has big open fires and we plan to serve mulled wine and hot chocolate..........so it wont be cold just cosy. My mum is also making my cake which has xmas roses and a snow setting on it but filled moist chocolate.

You can always warm the theme with food and beverages aswell remember Smiley smile

I guess it depends when u r having the wedding!

Moto for the day - A happy marriage is all about give and take ;-) (cheese)

I'm so pleased we had a winter wedding (Nov 1st)! We were going to go with burgundy but in the end we went with red instead (couldn't find dresses I liked for the BM's in burgundy). I'm so glad we did because everything just looked fab with the bright red, especially as we had a cold crisp bright winter day! Against the white tableclothes the red roses, red favours etc just looked fab! (even if I do say so myself!)

    Here's a pic of the BM's -

This is kinda what I image OH is thinking (maybe not on this scale) and I can kinda see why he'd like it. Then picture you coming down the aisle in warm ivory and a fur shrug and BM in red/burgundy........see it could work as a compromise :-)

    Hope this helps x

I would've love to do this....but live to far from the venue :-( That's why I can't wait to launch my biz as a wedding planner (almost there).........then I can give brides those extra hands to make the day they want :-)

What sort of Winter time are you thinking? Christmas? Have been a Christmas bridesmaid - 28th Dec. And a freezing Winter bridesmaid - 20th Feb.

Christmas - bride was in white, & we wore burgundy & white dresses. Bouquet & buttonholes were holly & mistletoe

Winter - bride wore white, & we wore ornage. Not rust - ORANGE! It sounds bizarre but we had cream velvet stoles & bride had a full length cream velvet cape. And although it was freezing - the pictures look amazing outside the church, it was a real crisp, clear day & was beautiful.

Rococco those pictures look amazing don't they! we're not actually getting married for another four years yet (and even then it might end up being longer ☹️ !) and i do love that he has an opinion. i want it to be about both of us not just my wedding planning skills! ha ha ha. i was even thinking today about a midnight blue dress i saw in town which has small crystals all over the bodice, then i was thinking about putting my MOH in ice blue and my BM's in silver? i'm not 100% sure yet it depends which colour we go for. i'm not sure i could have the blue mixed with red though, if i was going to go for winter wonderland it would have to be the type of thing on the right hand picture i think.

Pengun, i'm not keen on ice white against red, it just reminds me of santa. although OH did express a want for Santa everywhere but i put my foot down. but your bridesmiads do look lovely. what colour was your dress?

And Katie Vale we were thinking winter solstice time, around 21st/ 22nd of december so that its close to christmas, but not an all about christmas wedding. IYSWIM?

    Hi ya

I do love winter weddings! You do need to make sure you have contingencies for bad weather (windy/wet/snow/cold). I've got a wedding on the 29th December and we've gone for a Narnia theme. I've designed a 'wardrobe' that people walk through into the reception room where we've collected big branches which are being 'cemented' into large pots and sprayed with fake snow and then having lots of fairy lights in and icicles hanging too.

The tables are long tables where we have white and silver runners with a two different types of centrepieces. Vases filled with sellophane and water with a pad of white flowers (Gyphsolphilia and lillies) with silver willow coming through, on top of the vase. Smaller globe cracked glaze candle holders and then lots of tealights in votives. Along the runners and wrapping around all of the centrpieces will be glass beads on silver wire. We're doing favours of turkish delight in simple white boxes. There are three large tables named 'Lion' 'Witch' 'Wadrobe' and the table plan will be a tree with the names hanging on lables which will then be turned into a wishing tree later on. This is for the day, then for the evening there is a seperate room where it's a traditional christmas. We're buying 4-5 larger christmas trees the day before (very cheap) and lots of decorations in the sales for the trees. Lots of berries, hollies and mistletoe and LOTS of candles! This will be the evening reception room so there's the best of both worlds!!!Icey and sparkly and rich and colourful. The bride is going to be wearing red and the bridesmaids are wearing ivory with gorgeous faux wraps.

You could go for deep greens and blues too which I also adore or deep purples and reds, there's lots of exciting ideas in the wedding magazines at the moment. Have a look in the next few month's issues to get lots of other ideas,

An important part of winter weddings is the food and drink, try and come up with a menu which is warming and hearty as opposed to something you might think of for a summery wedding.

    HTH

We get married on 28th December this year and my bridesmaid is in Amethyst purple. I originally wanted quite a lot of silver accessories on the tables, however the reception room is quite traditional and I have just found our that this year they will have a very traditional Christmas tree in the room decorated in green and reds, so I am sticking to more neutral colours on the tables with white/ivory floating candles, table crystals and just some crackers to add a splash of colour to tie in with the venues decorations.

For the evening we are having loads of tealights and probably fairy lights too (the good thing is there's loads to chose from this time of year!).

We are having mulled wine, mince pies and shortbread when we arrive at the hotel which will be lovely by the fire!

Wow thanks finesse. i love the idea of the narnia thing and i have always had my heart set on a coloured dress, particularly burgundy or claret.

we're only looking for ideas still at the moment, don't want to get too carried away as it could be another four years, maybe longer depending on work prospects before we finally tie the knot.

Thank you for the inspiration though Smiley smile

No problem, it's a theme you can do with any budget, you can have accents of the theme or completely replicate Narnia with faux snow everywhere, props and arrive on the ice queens carriage, etc.

Make sure you don't get wedding burn out too early on though. Styles and fashions change year to year so what might be a good idea now might seem really dated in four years time and who knows what the pricing structure is going to be like, hopefully prices won't sore too much with a recovery of the economy by then, but it's something to consider.

The main thing for you to do is collect pictures and images of things you like and themes. You may not be able to get exactly the same thing but it will remind you of what it is for you to look for.

If ever you want some more help further down the line, get in touch
