Church Music

For our processional music, we really like Canon in D and I had kind of presumed we would play this in the church from a CD. Have just spoken to my Mum who asked me what I had done about making sure the organist was free on our date. I hadn't I replied as I don't really like the sound of an organ and when I asked her what was wrong with playing it on a CD she basically went 'how can you play it on a CD in a church, that will sound terrible, you need to have the organist play it!'

Sooo... having only been to a few weddings and really not remembering what things sound like, is this pretty much the case? Is anyone else doing this or have thought of this?

Just been on youtube and it doesn't even sound the same played on an organ! wonder how much a string quartet would be....hmm

I priced a string quartet and it was quite expnsive. I found the harpist cheaper. Is there a piano in your church by any chance? or does the church have a praise band, maybe a flautist??

I'm having Canon in D on the organ, it actually sounds really nice in church and the problem with a CD is that if the church is big the sound won't reach the whole of the congregation and there might be a problem with acoustics of there is a really high ceiling.

I went to a wedding in my church a few weeks back and decided there and then that we didn't like the sound of the organ. It scares me!

Our church has a really good sound system, speakers all down the side and so I am hoping to have Jonathan Cain's Bridal March played from CD.

I'm going to speak to them and maybe see if I can pop along one day to test it out!

I priced a harpist for the ceremony at around £200 and thats for a catholic mass. It sounds absolutely beautiful!

I'm not going down the classical route. We have instrumental versions on a cd which we are giving to the vicar tonight. I've heard cds played in the church before and it sounds fine. Could you maybe get a copy on cd and take it to the church to listen to?

My wedding is in a chapel and they gave me a heads up on the sound system, it is odd, but some versions of different songs sound better in such an acoustic space. Ask the venue if you can see what sounds best and if you have to take your own cd player make sure it is best placed somewhere in the middle. see if you can try it out-You can always find orchestral versions of religious songs or organ versions of modern songs so have a play around!

There are some great songs on ITunes specifically for weddings, you may even find you change your mind! I wanted the Bridal chorus and have ended up with a classical version of a rock song! (search for orchestral pop music / rock music and check it out!)

    Good luck and smiles! x
