Church or Civil Ceremony?

HatTrick, 8 September, 2009 at 14:59

Just thought I'd be nosey and ask (obviously you don't have to answer if you don't want to) which of you are having a church wedding and which of you are having a civil service? And if you are having a church service, do you attend church regularly? We are having a church wedding :-)

Civil ceremony for us - why say the most important vows of our lives to a fictional entity? It would make a farce of the commitment we're making to each other...

(OK - Im being deliberately inflamatory! Sorry if youre offended! Each to their own beliefs, eh?) ️?️

Well I'm not offended but I do think your comment is quite abrupt and could see why others may find it quite offensive. It sounds to me like your suggesting all vows said in church are a farce.

Sorry - as I say, I was in that kind of mood yesterday as was aware I was being controversial! Its the vows you make to each other which count, wherever you make them...

groomwithaview I agree that sounded harsh - but I also 100% agree with you on principal - for occasions where couples are not remotely religious and want to have the wedding in a church because it 'looks nice', why have a religious ceremony when it means nothing to you?

I'm assuming you weren't suggesting all vows in a church are meaningless - they would be for you, as a non-religious person (and for me for that matter).

WSS. OH wanted a church wedding but I'm not a bit religous and I wanted to go abroad so we compromised and are having a civil ceremony in a lovely old house/hotel.

Civil for us...neither h2b or I are religious in anyway and have never gone to church in the whole 12 years we have been together so think it would mock the christian faith to only go for a few weeks to get married in one.

We are having a Civil Ceremony, neither of us are religous & the only time we ever go to church is for other Weddings & Christenings.

I personally don't like church weddings anyway.

Hiya, we are having a civil ceremony in a hotel, because yes, although I am christened a catholic, I would feel like a hypocrite having a church wedding because I havent been to church since I was little.

I agree that the backdrop of the church in photos is stunning, but a civil ceremony is what you make it, there are fors and againsts for both - its personal choice.
