cities and towns to go to from Derby

cornflake girl, 1 March, 2009 at 18:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Going down to my Mum and Dad's, in Derby, just before Easter. The plan is that we will stay at my parents house for one night on a Saturday, then go somewhere on the Sunday and stop overnight in a Travelodge (preferably one of those cheap deals), then go back to my mum's the next day (probably late afternoon). We'll be taking the car down to Derby but it might be better to go somewhere on the train (although car is an option if the transport links from derby are rubbish). Options for places could be Coventry, Oxford, Gloucester etc etc. So, can anyone recommend somewhere? There will just be me and H and we would want to do a little bit of shopping, eating and drinking and take in a few sights.

Derby is nice ? Great shopping at the new Westfeld Centre, I recommend the 'director's lounge' at the cinema also in the Westfield Centre, there are nice places to eat along Friargate, and a new boutique hotel in the Cathedral Quarter.

I was also going to say Nottingham or Sheffield? Not sure about sights etc but from when I've been to both (years ago!), the shopping was good

I know all about Derby cos I go there a few times a year - looking for somewhere to go from there. Sorry, maybe my post isn't very clear.

How about Cheltenham or Stratford on Avon. Both of them, plus Oxford, are about 90 mins away.

Are you going to Derby itself or somewhere round about? I'm South Derbyshire.

Yeah, have been to both as a child (parents use to take me and my brother everywhere as kids cos we had free train travel as dad used to work for railway.) but can't remember much about them.

My parents live in Chaddesden so we'll be stopping there. Also plan on going to Belper to visit a bead shop (I make my own jewellery).

Have you done the Peak District? That would be my first suggestion.
Then, we've just been to Shrewsbury for a few days-nice and historic.

There are lots of nice places in the peak district, like Ashbourne or Bakewell, or you could head into Birmingham (very easy by train) as there's lots to do there.

I live in Derby and we spent our last wedding anniversary in Stratford on Avon - it was really nice. Beautiful place, loads of places to eat etc and loads of hotels. I would recommend it!
