Civil ceremony readings - who to ask?

Soon to be Mrs W, 16 February, 2010 at 10:04 Posted on Planning 0 8

We are only having a small civil ceremony with a max of 50 people and we only have one sibling each and they are already the usher and best man.

I was just wondering, who are you all having to do readings at your ceremony? Would you ask parents/friends to do a reading? Would they be offended that we hadnt asked them to be ushers / bridemaids etc - am i worrying to much about other people again ?

I think it's a nice way to include people who aren't ushers/BMs etc. We're having one of my oldest friends who isn't a BM but i wanted her to be included, and H2Bs sister.

First time round, I asked H2B's dad (his mum was too shy) and my auntie (she was my sort of cmb - I didnt have any bm's but she organised my hen night). This time, will probably ask H2B's sil, not sure for the second reading, as the rest of the family will be tied up in other duties.

I wanted H2B's sister to do one as she told me the day we got engaged that she didnt want to be bridesmaid....but then raised the subject of a reading and she went very pale and said no way as she doesn't want everyone looking at her etc

so i'm going to ask a few of my close friends to do a "group" reading with a few lines each as think it'd be nice to have them involved

i also asked H2B the other day who he would like to do the other reading (i want 2 so as to pad the ceremony out a bit!!) as he has 3 brothers i suggested maybe one of them but he said he doesn't think that they'd want to do it either....so guessing it will be someone else from my side for that one too!!

sorry this probably doesn't help much - but i guess my point is ask people if they are up for doing it beforehand as a lot of people don't like speaking in front of other people! xx

I've asked one of our best mates to do the reading as we're only having family as bridesmaids, her partner is best man and we wanted to include her as well somehow.

Whilst on the subject of readings what have you all chosen? I've gone with a excerpt from Captain Corellis Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres

Im having one of my closest friends do a reading and my brother has said he would do one aswell which is really important to me as he is very shy and has severe dyslexia combined with really bad eyesight. i might ask another one of my friends to be on stanby just incase he feel that he cant do it when it comes to the day

I agree with AutumnRose, it's a good way of including people who aren't in the wedding party but are close to you. We are having OH's cousin, who he's always been very close to, and my brother.

I am having a fairly small wedding, civil ceremony with about 65 guests.

We have two bridesmaids and a bestman, I didn't want to pick a bridesmaid to be MOH or to sign the register as I didn't want to leave the other bridesmaid out, so we have decided that, my mum and OH's dad will be our witnesses and OH's mum will do a reading (and my dad will walk me down the aisle) so that way everyone has had a part in the day!
