Civil Ceremony Vows...What are you doing?

Mrs G to be, 24 February, 2011 at 22:12 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi All,

Weve been going through our book from the registrar where we need to pick our vows etc. Well in it its got additional promises and about 9 promises in it. We were thinking seeing as the ceremony is going to be so short then we'd like to have the additional promise to say, BUT the thought of saying those out infront of everyone brings me out in a sweat!! ? I read on the internet that you can actually have the promise read out in a quesion format with th "I Will, I Do" business..

So anyway, just wondering what your doing? Are you having just vows or both or writing your own?

xx

We are actually going to do get our Notice sorted on Tuesday, i might sound like a right plank! But just assumed you get bog standard Vows.

Whats this promises thing? I will probabaly be such a wreck with nerves on the day i'll only be able to say the minimum through my blubbing lol!

But would love the ceremony to feel a little more personal.

Lol no your not a plank..i thought the same as you, thought there were the usual words that you repeat and that be it. they gave us a book and you choose your compulsory things that you have to say I do solemly declare etc etc. And then you can do optional promises which are sort of..i promise to love, cherish, through good and bad etc, but there's no way on this earth i could read them all out in one go on my own!!! Ahhhh. But I wouldnt mind the registar saying them for us to just say I will, I can cope with that ? Were ringing tomorrow to try and find out more!

I actually quite like the idea of saying the promises, I shall have to find out what my registrar has to say about this, as i think i'd rather go for the saying I will, over reading it out myself too. I'm a big baby lol!

Hello there. I am having a civil ceremony and was sent a choices pack with additional promises and was a bit confused by it all!

As far as I can see there are the contractual vows then the promises are the things afterwards that are optional where you promise your h2b to be faithful etc. However, I did not like the promises included in the pack, they seemed to be cheesy and all ended with "with all my heart".

Anyone out there had or having a civil ceremony? What did you do? I would like to say some something but I want something trad as you may get in a church service (only without the god bit obviously!).

For ours, the registry office sent out a form with various options on it and we just had to check the box with which options we preferred - and for each bit, it was the one with the least amount of words for us to say! Neither of us like talking in front of a room full of people, so we kinda took the wimps way out! We just have to say "I am" when asked if we are lawfully free to marry, and we have a short sentence to say when we exchange rings.

We have both picked a different additional vow each from the list they gave us. I think I went for no.1 and OH. went for no.5, although not sure if yours are in the same order!! I hate public speaking and am dreading it but I think it feels a bit more special and wll regeret it if I dont say much. You could always do the last one and just say 'I will'!! x

We got a lot of different choices too. For practically every part of the ceremony there were extra bits that you could add in or you could write your own - as well as the bits that have to be included. We've wimped out though - we've added in some extra bits but have gone down the route of the registrar asking it as a question and us just answering. Neither of us fancied having to repeat it all in front of everyone
