Clever people of hitched I need your help as I'm out of ideas!

Hugo Brambles, 19 September, 2008 at 20:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

I need to find out how many houses are in each residential area of my town. It's not postcode specific unfortunatley either and the areas come under different councils. I've rung the town hall and been passed from pillar to post, honestly must have spoke to 10 departments today and no-one can help.

I'm out of ideas, I really thought it would be fairly simple information to get hold of but apparently not. Any ideas bar going out and counting!!

Thanks

I would of thought that the council would be the best bet, but if they have failed I wonder if Royal Mail might be abe to help you ?

Thanks Bettyb, it was the town hall I rang (couldn't think of the word for it) and no they couldn't help. Tried the post office and they said try the council!

Id say the first place to go would be the council, Town Clerks Office or the Electoral Registration Officer. I say this as thats where we get our info from regarding numbers of properties (and electors within them) in specific areas.

    Have you tried www.upmystreet.com

I'm not entirely sure whether they have the exact information you're looking for but they usually have all sorts of random stats on there.

Well Im stumped then, as they are the first point of contact for me when Im doing a council boundary review to find out how many properties are in a particular area that might be affected if we move a boundary. Seems that your council (like lots of others out there) dont know their arse from their elbow!

Random and probably useless suggestion - but do you know anyone who works for the local Royal Mail - they would have an idea of how many residential properties on each street cos of house numbers so you could get a rough idea.... then you could just group streets into areas...

Thanks catcat but that'd be a huge job I think as we're talking up to 10,000 houses I would guess?

Right, you can find the number of houses in a postcode area on here, on the housing tab...

    http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadHome.do;jessionid=ac1f930bce6d3d9ccd6c490402a98fc84c0118b99c9?m=0&s=1221857843046&enc=1&nsjs=true&nsck=true&nssvg=true&nswid=1259

You should be able to do it by area too, but not sure how the naming of the areas you need will work you'll probably need to play to find what you need... just did this one for random postcode...

Maybe but its more complicated than that really as the areas are divided over two postcodes and even I knew how many houses were in each postcode it still wouldn't tell me how many would be in the specific area.

I'm sure as WT says that the council will know but I'm just getting the runaround?

Thanks PA - that is a really interesting site but not sure its going to do what I want? It only seems to work on the postcode not the local district name (I have tried and it won't recognise it). The problem with the postcode, well postcodes as the districts span two is that those two account for over 30 districts and I only want to know about 6 of them if that makes sense?

Different names seem to work for different options... I tried Totton (where I live) but it will only work as a ward or parish, not as an area.

The other thing you could try is finding a postcode map, and typing in the individual full postcodes as output areas? I think thats the smallest area you will find, due to restriction of data due to confidentiality from the 2001 stats.

When I need this information from my council, I tend to get caught up in a huge circular chase for a couple of days, but end up with Democratic Services, or whoever handle the electoral role. What might be useful to you is the Parish Councils register / District Councils, as this is towns etc. broadly broken up into areas. These people might be a good start

    https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/

To give you boundaries and clerks of parish councils / District councils etc.
