Clothes hayulp

So, I have a wonderful, shiny new job to go to at the end of July. Having worked in meeja for years, I am used to wearing jeans and having no dress code at work. The new role is smart dress. I have a really nice grey LK Bennett suit that I got for the interview, and a couple of dresses (both patterened), a black M&S jacket and a pair of grey Whistles trousers I have never worn as they need taking up <lazy>

I need two or three pairs of trousers, but I have real problems finding them to fit. I have to buy petites as I am only 5'2'' and I have slim hips that don't curve out. I find most trousers I try on look really silly as they stick out over my hips. Straight leg trousers look better than wide leg. To give you an idea of my figure - Top Shop and River Island are pretty much the only every day jeans that fit my shape. Next and M&S (and most other shops it seems) are built for pears, and I look dreadful in their stuff. I'm a size 12 top, 12 (well, maybe 11 now, annoyingly) bottom.

So - where to go for nice smart, straight legged trousers without comedy curvy hip shape? Up to about £70 a pair. I fank yoo.

I have the same issue with trousers, so never wear them ?

They'd be way too long for you but could be taken up - Mango/Zara? And how about getting a couple of knee-length flippy skirts? They'd be fine for summer, even in a more formal office.

Mrs Winkle - congratulations! I must have missed your post about getting the job - was it one of the interviews this week?

Well done - that must be a massive relief.

I can't help much with the clothes though.

Do you know Soph, in M&S even the skirts that went with suits I was trying had huge hips. I am going to look for skirts too, but I really want some trousers. <stiff bodied tantrum>

Thanks Alison - I had the first interview last tuesday and the second on Monday.

I have the opposite problem so probably no help. I have big curvy hips and a small waist. M&S never fit me so may fit you. Next do fit me so probably wouldn't fit you. Have you tried Hobbs? A petite friend loves their clothes.

M&S are dreadful on me, acres of fabric where I should have hips! lol

I'll look in Hobbs - good idea, never thought of them.

    Congrats on the job!

As for work clothes, I would try Banana Republic or Zara. Can't think of anywhere else at the moment.

Firsttimemum - yes, similar but in a totally different sort of organisation. I'm really looking forward to the challenge.

Fantastic , so pleased for you

I am sure the change will do you good - these things often have silver linings!

my brother was made redundant in 2003 from a big blue chip got a nice pay off, bought a house and set up his own business doing the stuff he really liked and never worked for anyone again :-)

Congratulations on the new job - that's great news!!!

Have you thought about going in to a department store (Selfridges is probably best) and getting a personal shopper? They would be able to tell you which style would be best for you and then run around and find the trousers for you.

Zara is fantastic for slim hipped styles, but beware the length, you will need to take them up. Echo WEES about Hobbs, also try Karen Millen, they are quite slim fitting in there. Umm.... dare I suggest Boden? and definitely a session in Selfridges as well.

Congrats on the job as well! Enjoy!
