Clueless about dress shopping....

l.jo-swansea, 1 July, 2008 at 16:08 Posted on Planning 0 5

Ok I have just started properly looking for dresses for my wedding on 27th June 09.

Up until now I have looked in magazines and on the internet to get ideas of what styles I would like. I saw some Mori Lee and Jenny Packham ones that were my style and some other styles where I have only got the picture and not the designer.

This weekend just gone I stepped foot in bridal shops for the first time. One of these was a Mori Lee stockist. When the lady working at the shop was taking me through her samples, I didnt see any of the ones that I had seen in the magazines etc. I didnt really like many of the styles that the other shops had either. They all seem to be strapless corset styles which do absolutely nothing for me.

Right, so what I am wondering is how do you go about trying dresses on that you have only seen in magazines and are not in the shops? I dont want to order them from the shop because won't I then be obliged to buy it?? And there is no guarantee that it would like nice on me.

Also I have seen some of these styles on e bay (made in china?) is the best way to go about it? However, am dubious about getting them this way and what would I do after buying a dress on e bay that needed alterations and what if I got a size too small??

Any advice welcome please....

You can usually go to a designer's website and see who stocks their dresses in your area, then ring round the shops and see if they have them.

However, don't be so fixed on what is "your style" or not. Many dresses don't have "hanger appeal" and look completely different on.

I had a very distinct idea about what would suit my body shape and ended up with a dress totally different to what I would have dreamed of. I didn't even choose it to try on - the lady in the bridal shop suggested I try it.

The answer is to try on as many different styles of dress - don't discount until you've seen yourself in them.

    Good luck!

Thanks, yes I have been told that a lot of brides choose a completely different dress than they were expecting. What happens if I ring the shops and they dont have the styles stocked??

then you ring the next one... and the next one...!

When I went shopping I took three friends and they all picked stuff for me so I tried on some stuff that I would never have picked. Don't get too hung up on finding a particular style you've seen on an air brushed model - go to shops and try as much on as poss! If you've exhaused all the shops near by and still don't like anything THEN start worrying about where to find that style you just couldn't find!
