Clueless Bride to Be - advice needed

bekijayne, 9 January, 2013 at 12:34 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hello everyone,

My Fiance and I are getting married on 28th July this year. We've just set the date and I'm just getting to grip with what actually has to be done in the next 6 months!

I'm a bit of a 'non-bride' in terms of knowing what I what I want and what I should be doing ? and it's become apparent that I'm meant to be deciding on a colour scheme! I want my bridesmaid to wear a colour that suits her and get a dress that she might actually wear again so I've given her a fair bit of freedom in picking the dress. It looks likely we'll be going for a dark green as it's a fav colour and really suits her, if not green then a dark red (she's chosen colours that will match well with my H2B's tartan). I'd be happy with either.

So the really dumb question is how does this work with the whole wedding colour scheme? If she goes for green do I have to have green chair ties or can I just choose another colour that goes with the green? If I put green anywhere else does it have to be the same shade of green? Aaaarrggghhh! I'm so clueless how this is meant to work!!

Any advice will be gratefully received!!!

Beki

    Hi Beki,

My OH and I set a date for early June and apart from confirming the reg office, almost everything else is still to do! I'm not stressing about it too much and just trying to focus on what is important and within our limited budget. I'm a bit of a 'non-bride' too!

It sounds like your colour scheme could be red and green to go with H2bs tartan - those two colours complement each other beautifully. Could you use tartan ribbons to decorate the chairs? And I would not worry about matching the shades of green too much, a blend of colours will be fine, your guests will not be overly concerned about the colours I'm sure :-)

Best of luck with the preparations,

    Jen

You say HAVE TO a lot.

It's your wedding, have what YOU want. If you want everything to be random colours then go for it! If however you want everything to pull together and aren't sure how to do that, then that is a different question entirely. The tartan sounds like a good start to base around, you could pick out one or more colours from that maybe?

We are all very happy to offer our opinions on things if you are ever stuck, especially if flashes are involved Smiley laugh

Hey Beki, don't worry there's no set hard and fast rules! It does look a bit nicer to aim for the same shade of green though rather than having things look marginally different because it might look like an accidental colour clash. Usually people just pick a handful of colours and theme everything in those few colours. Alternatively, you can go for the multi theme, like things completely diff colours on purpose (although I don't know if this would work because I get the impression you have one bridesmaid? It looks nice when there's say 5 bridesmaids and each wear a diff colour in the same style)

Also, like it's been said in another hitcher's thread *points thataway*, going for venue and services i.e. dj, tog, florist, is worth focusing on first before worrying about colours, as they get booked up.

    Hi Beki

You could combine the 2 colours of Red & Green and add in Ivory to break them up. Here are a few examples:

    I have no colour scheme.

Pretty much most things are going to be white ish. I want white based flowers with greenery. The linen on the table will be white as standard and I have white candles in glass for the centre pieces. I'd like my bridesmaid in a gun-metal grey dress (I only have one) but this isn't important if we can't find one, green suits her colouring, as does blue or black though and with every thing else being neutral we can have what ever colour we want. My reception is a 500 year old barn so I don't need to decorate it much, maybe the old foam white rose maybe? Dunno.

Point is - you can make things as co-ordinated (or not) colour wise as you like. Try not to worry.

    Hi Beki,

I couldn't agree on colours either so I let the bridesmaids try on what they thought was best and then worked from there. I am also having green (emerald though) but am looking to have ivory chair ties so they don't match.

Also- I'm excited to finally see my date twin! WOOO! we're are 28th July as well.

    Hello

I know many people do coordinate their wedding colours but it is never something I have understood. I would never check the venue decor when going out for a meal to ensure what I wear coordinates with it, so don't understand why you would need t do it for a wedding.

Its your day do what you like!

When i got married, 8 yrs ago now, my fave colour has always been a deep wine red so i had my dress in that colour and then i just picked a couple of other colours that went nicley with it, gold and ivory, they are neutral so go with anything.

I think there is a lot of pressure on brides to be "on trend" which is all well and good, but it's your day and at the end of it you must be happy with what you choose.

Good luck I'm sure you'll get it sorted, and from what I can tell the ladies are very helpful on here.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding Beki!

Firstly you seem to be overwhelmed by supposed 'rules'. I want to assure you that there are no hard and steadfast rules that you have to follow when it comes to your wedding. What I would suggest would be for you to take a look at some Pinterest mood boards to see what sort of colours or themes work well together. We've done alot of them and if you like we can build one for you to help you move through the vast amount of material online. It can be very daunting - we know! ? We'd be happy to help out. You've come to the right place and no doubt will receive loads of advice. Just know that there are no rules or systems you have to follow when planning your wedding; do what feels natural and best suited to you and your fiance. You want a wedding day that reflects who you both are as individuals and a couple, not a cookie-cutter wedding that the 'industry' says you should have.

Take a look at our boards and let us know if you'd like us to build you one. Drop us a line at **@*****************.***

BTW - green is THE colour for 2013 so you are bang on trend coincidentially?

    Good luck,

    KCW

Hi again, one other thing just occured after I pressed the reply button.

To get away from the whole 'matchy-matchy' ie: if she wears green, do I have to do everything green, and in what shade etc? Maybe consider an alternative accent colour which might go well with both green and red depneding upon what she chooses. Both dark red and green look lovely with dark purple for example. Just a thought. =)

Whatever you do will be individual and the right thing for you. Take a look at Pinterest for ideas and others' moodboards but ultimately you can do whatever you like, so have fun :o)

Thanks everyone! Good advice from everyone and also thanks for the reasurance that I don't 'have' to follow the crowd!

I guess I was starting to feel the pressure from others who are asking me what my plans are for this that and the other to do with the wedding and most of the stuff hadn't even crossed my mind!

Things are complicated by the fact we're living in Germany but getting married back in Edinburgh where H2B's family are!

I agree that the Photographer and Ceilidh band are definitely the most important things to get booked at this point but, thankfully, I get help from H2B with those decisions! We're hoping MIL2B can source the band which will take the pressure off.

    Rhoslyn: date twins.... fab! ?
