Collecting tips: Wedding first dance - how to pick and arrange your song

yes2011, 7 September, 2012 at 18:59 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi all,

let me first say thank you for all your tips and advice when I panicked just before the wedding date (August 13, 2011). Also thank you one special member who recommended me her stylist in Cambridge!

One year later I have written a short 'how to' article about how to pick your first dance song (if it's a pop song). I got to this because of our anniversary... I would love to hear additional tips from all of you, because I'm sure i forgot something.

Ha! We had a punky rock tune, pretty quick, tiny dance floor, no elegance required.

Why did it work so well for us? It was 'our' song, everyone knew it, we knew how to dance to it (not that there were any rules) because we dance to it a lot.

That's how to pick a first dance.

I'm glad I didn't read your article before my wedding! I never even thought of half your points, let alone considered performing formations or timing when others can join us.

My OH chose the song for the first dance, because he liked it, because he knows I sing my heart out to it and because he thinks the lyrics describe his feelings towards me. It can be really simple if you let it.

We already decided our first dance song is going to be the funky gibbon by the goodies.

Wether this will end up being the second song as the planning becomes more advanced remains to be seen!!

Where on earth would I find a dance floor similar to my venue to practice?

We're having our song becasue the we feel the lyrics described our relationship, and we both love it. Never ever danced to it though... It not a song you hear when your out, will see how it goes on the day when were all loved up ?

Good question Smiley winking I just meant more that dancing feels different in a gym hall than in your back garden or on your bedroom carpet. It's more meant in terms of space. We danced a few trials in our living room which is way too small, and felt that a quick song works. Then we tried dancing to the same song in a big gym hall with our dance teacher and suddenly we felt we could never keep dancing so quick throughout the whole song. We just made bigger steps in the bigger room I guess.

    Hey,

if I had read my own post I would have been stressed out Smiley smile Maybe I should write somewhere in the blog post that all this doesn't matter if you just love the song and it means something to you. We didn't really feel like we were following all these rules, but only afterwards (I wrote this a year later) I thought there were a few things here and there that we discovered on the way.

I agree that for many people it's better to discover these things. I just know that some want to get some tips, so I thought my first dance and how everything led to it could help.

    Thanks for this!

    I rewrote the start:

"Before you read on: all of the following doesn’t matter if you just love your song and it means something to you. Science Boy and I basically discovered all the little things on the way when picking our song. With ‘on the way’ I mean ‘when we tried dancing to the song’. If you need only one tip, it’s: dance to the song with your partner many times. This should be easy since you probably love the tune anyways."

Ha ha ours was fast and our "dance floor" was an altar, so vay tiny!( Our venue was an old converted church, we didn't do our first dance during the ceremony) It went just fine! We also had the full song, followed by me and my Dad dancing to a full song(again not slow, mid tempo)... No one was bored, infact thats the part that most people videoed/commented on.

Ours was fairly fast, we didn't practice, I'd taken my shoes off so kept tripping on my dress and OH stood on it and ripped the hook off. But I wouldn't change a thing.
