Color Help

mandunc14, 14 January, 2013 at 02:33 Posted on Planning 0 23

Originally we were going to go with Mere Court for our venue which is very open and airy with a hardwood floor. For our colors I had wanted to go with a bronze/taupe color for the dresses with a dark teal accent.

However in the end we actually ended up choosing Cranage Hall - the room is a lot darker and has carpet - a blue, red and gold mix. Based on this should I change my colors

We dont want the traditional white linens, and are thinking of doing them in either the teal or taupe. Now Im questioning both my color choice and doing a colored linen. Can anyone offer any advice. Once I have my colors set, I can run with that, but I fully admit to being rubbish at picking them out.

Is there a reason why no one replys to any thread I start? This is the second or third thread Ive started and no one has replied. I'm sorry if I have stepped on toes by joining this forum ?

I did read your thread but wasn't sure what advice to offer. Are you meaning instead of white table cloths you want teal or taupe? I imagine teal will make the room look v dark.

Hi there - couldn't help but notice your flag avatar. I (Courtney) am Canadian and husband is English. So perhaps we have something in common? =)

As for your colours, this is a tricky one. What colour flowers are you going with or have you yet to get that far?

    I havent got that far.

I guess my question is mainly "Do I need to do certain colors because of the carpet color, or should I not factor that in?" I dont need to go teal - I could do taupe/bronze for the linens but the girls dresses would blend in then. Perhaps a white underlay with a bronze overlay and teal napkins? I truly am horrible picturing things in my mind when it comes to color.

Im sorry if I sounded short/bitchy earlier Smiley sad Im quickly becoming overwhelmed trying to plan this wedding from Canada, and its only been 2 weeks. I feel very left out as my parents-in-law are doing stuff with my fiance (which I do realize is sweet and I am thankful for them).

And yes I am from Canada :0

Hey, I'm sorry if you felt you weren't getting thread responses, I'm sure it wouldn't have been on purpose, I've just noticed this thread myself! I wouldn't go for a bold colour for the table linens like teal, I think it could potentially be an eyesore/bit too bright, I'd definitely go lighter or low key on linens and if you want the teal or taupe accents, then to change that for things like the chair bows or the centerpieces. I don't know thats just my vibe Smiley smile

How about sticking to white table linen (it'll be cheaper) but going for coloured table runners and chair sashes?

I'd personally disregard the colour of the carpet, trying to match it will cause you a huge headache.

Fair enough - I do appreciate the honesty, and again, Im sorry I came off so rude. Just not been a good day, not that I should let that get me down.

This is what I was having in mind (although with white chair covers)

But would this be better and use teal either for napkins or somehow center pieces?

Actually looking at this, I guess the white is better. I just really dislike the room we are having the reception in and Im trying to find ways to improve it. I never thought about the colored linens being more money.

Thanks for the advice- actually it helped in more ways than one, because I actually really like the material and the way the bows are shaped in the last picture Smiley laugh Now I just need to find a way to incorporate the teal

I imagine it's because you post at weird times (understandable, given your location). Then by the time business starts over here, your posts are pushed down to pages 2+, so don't get attention.

White linen will make the room look so much brighter.

I've been to a wedding here (couldn't have told you what the carpet colour was). Make sure the management keep tight control on gate-crashing guests form other weddings. Suggest the rear garden for reception drinks. Don't have the house DJ or, if you have to, make sure he doesn't play Dr Alban.

Hi. Sorry you felt like no one was replying. It is really not a cliquey forum at all so post away. I think during the working day over here ppl tend to reply back to ppl with family situations who are upset etc and minor things such as colour schemes when they have time later on. (Although this might just be me as I am much better at giving advice to ppl problems than practical problems and cant help with your colour scheme query, my difficulties with colours is why I stipulated a neutral room haha) x

    Hi,

I too would take absolutely no notice of the carpet colour. people will fous on the decor and your colours. I would stick to white cloths and perhaps coloured sashes and runners or even sprinkles to accent the colours of the dresses. The flowers too could accent the colours and contrast with the bridesmaids. I would stick to only two or three colours and the white.

    Hope that helps.

Why not set up a mock table at home to get a basic idea of what it could look like

Hmm based on your reply Im not very confident with the choice we made. We have actually optioned to have the reception drinks in the bar area down stairs - which will be blocked off. I think we are hiring an outside DJ...and I have no idea who/what is Dr. Alban lol. Your post has me a bit scared! Hopefully it will be ok Smiley smile

The rear garden is just lovely; it is accessible from the main bar so people might go out there anyway, weather permitting. The downstairs bar, IIRC, has a big TV so you might want to ensure they aren't showing football! The in-house DJ was dire. However, I am talking about an event some 5 or 6 years ago, so will likely have changed by now. My Boy, who is a some time DJ, actually offered to take over, it was that bad! The problem with gate-crashers stemmed from the main bar being used by multiple wedding parties, so people seemed to think it OK to come and have a nosy at my friend's party.

    Forewarned is forearmed!

The wedding itself ran well. The ceremony room was lovely, as were the welcome areas and sitting rooms. I'll see if I can drag some pictures from FB to show you.

Oh gotcha! Thanks so much for the advice and any/all pictures are welcome.

We will most certainly ensure we get our own dj, even if it is another person now, better safe than sorry! They told us now, that they dont tend to have multiple weddings (although could still happen). We need to choose between 2 rooms at the moment - we can use the middle sized room which would be full or we could move to the larger room and it would be more room. Perhaps we should do that to ensure we are the larger wedding. Your reply has put me more at ease. Being from Canada, its not like Ive been to weddings in the UK. We originally wanted Mere but with numbers of approx 100, we were scared the drinks reception area would be too crammed, especially if it rained.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I do believe it will be white and like in one of the pictures I posted. Stay tuned...I am sure I will have MANY MANY more questions

    Hi,

We've got the same carpet. My opinion is that nobody will be looking at it so are just doing what we want with venue anyway- however keeping it simple. For example fuschia pink looks so out of place in the venue.

I'd keep it simple with white tables and then you can add more fancy things to the table.

As for replying- I agree that it might be something to do with the time difference- I didn't see this thread at all until your second post.

I don't think I ever notice the colour of the carpets! just imagine all the people filling the space, no one will notice the carpet no matter what the colour is. That being said, I really do like that photo you have of the taupe-y linens, but you'd probably have to do a quite light coloured centrepiece.

BTW, noticed the avatar! I'm from Toronto, and I'm marrying my brit here in Kent this June! Seems to be a lot of us on here these days!

Im from Toronto as well. Do you live in the UK now?

When I am able to get back to the UK I will get a few venue dressers in and see what they say. I made my fiance promise that I had extra budget to dress up the room lol

I would go for White linen with splashes of your chosen colour if that is going to be Teal. You don't need your colour to be on everything, even if the favour boxes were that colour and there's some of it incorporated in the table centres. This will brighten up the room too.

I completely understand how stressed you must be. One of my Brides has just moved here from California so had the same stresses.

So if I do my chair sashes/bows in the bronze/taupe - what color should I do my napkins?

And then would I do teal the center pieces? or how do I incorporate the teal

I am also planning on a lot of uplighting...do I do that in teal (is that even possible or will it be green).

Sorry for all the questions. Im just really at a loss with colors and Im even wondering if I should change them to something more popular so I can find examples on line of ideas. Once I get my basic colors and ideas down I will be fine as I am very creative and I want to be at least slightly unique. lol I think I am coming back to the UK in August but it would drive me crazy waiting that long to pick colors

    Hi There

First of all, love your avatar and have taken the idea for my own Smiley smile Hope you don't mind!

Now, answerig your question, I would keep colour clash to a minimum, but personally I am very matchy matchy, and love matching ideas. Why don't you keep the same scheme from the bows to the napkins. So bronze/taupe bow/sash, calls for bronze/taupe napkins.

The teal centerpiece sounds lovely and would couple nicely with the blue from the carpet and the bronze in the sash/bow. It also looks a good idea for the uplighting, but I think if you go green, then it might clash with your ideas. The better thing to do is to speak with the company who will be doing the lights to see what is possible, or are you doing it yourself?

Don't compromise your ideas just because is not popular, I am sure your wedding will be unique and people will then always remember it!

    Hope it helped!

All ideas help because it points out things I may not have thought about. Im pretty sure if I go with these colors, my center pieces will be mainly teal because I love vibrant colors. The whole reason the bronze/teal came up was because some of our theme will have to do with travel - old suitcases, maps, etc so I knew I wanted the teal.

I just realized though, that for the menu we were going to place them in the airline envelopes (the one with the red and blue edging) and now I realize thats prob not going to work. Booooo. And my OH doesnt want navy as a color. hahah man I didnt think picking a color scheme would be my hardest choice!

But the red and blue would certainly match the carpet? ? So I am sure it would still work. WOuld they be left on the plate for the guests? This way they won't interfere with the grand scheme for pictures. It is only if you want to leave them "standing up" that might hide your centrepiece or clash with it, no?

I actually thought of it after I posted, and I dont care if they match. Its only the envelope. The menu inside will match so like you said said it wont even matter.

Sometimes saying things outloud (or typing them) helps make it so much clearer
